According to the Dalai Lama’s secretary, the 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama, was treated in a hospital in New Delhi, India on the 9th due to a chest infection and is now in stable condition.

After the failure of the Tibetan people to fight against Chinese rule in 1959, the Dalai Lama fled to India in order to escape China's suppression. He has lived in Dharamsala for 60 years.

Tenzin Taklha, the Dalai Lama's secretary, told Reuters that the Dalai Lama felt unwell on the morning of the 9th and was taken to hospital for examination.

Tenzin Tara said: "The doctor diagnosed his chest infection and has been treated. Now his condition is stable. He will be treated in the hospital for 2 to 3 days."

About 100,000 Tibetans currently live in India. They are worried that the struggle for real autonomy in Tibet will end with the death of the Dalai Lama.

The Dalai Lama told Reuters last month that after his death, his reincarnated soul boy might be found in India. He also warned that any successor appointed by China would not be respected.

Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama hospitalized with chest infection

(CNN)The Dalai Lama has been hospitalized with a chest infection, but is in a stable condition, his aides said Tuesday.
The 83-year-old Tibetan Buddhist monk had returned to his home of Dharamsala, in the Indian Himalayas, from a meeting with youth leaders in New Delhi when he felt "some discomfort," his private secretary Tenzin Taklha told CNN.
"He was brought to Delhi for check up. The doctors said he had some sort of a chest infection. He is fine and stable. He'll be treated for two more days," the aide said.

60 years after exile, Tibetans face a fight for survival in a post-Dalai Lama world

Last month marked 60 years since the Dalai Lama fled Tibet for exile in India, after an unsuccessful revolt following the arrival of Chinese troops in Tibet saw thousands flee across the border.
Ever since, the Dalai Lama -- who is revered as a living god by millions of Tibetan Buddhists -- has made India his home. India officially calls him "(our) most esteemed and honored guest."
From his base in India, the Dalai Lama traveled the globe, becoming an icon, culturally as well as religiously. Last year, however, he decided to cut his busy schedule, citing citing age and exhaustion.
It is unclear who will succeed him when he dies, how that person will be picked or whether there will even be another Dalai Lama.
Traditionally, the title is bestowed on the highest-ranking leader in Tibetan Buddhism. It is given to those deemed to be the reincarnation of a line of revered religious teachers.
Asked in a recent interview what might happen after his death, the Dalai Lama anticipated a possible attempt by Beijing to foist a successor on Tibetan Buddhists.
"In (the) future, in case you see two Dalai Lamas come, one from here, in a free country, one is chosen by Chinese, and then nobody will trust, nobody will respect (the one chosen by China)," he said. "So that's an additional problem for the Chinese. It's possible, it can happen."
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said in March the "reincarnation of living Buddhas including the Dalai Lama must comply with Chinese laws and regulations and follow religious rituals and historical conventions."

NEW DELHI (AP) — The Dalai Lama has been hospitalized in the Indian capital with a chest infection and is feeling better, his spokesman said Wednesday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader is under medication and likely to spend a day or two in the hospital, spokesman Tenzin Taklha said.

The Dalai Lama flew from Dharmsala for consultations with doctors in the capital and was hospitalized on Tuesday. The north Indian hill town has been his headquarters since he fled Tibet in 1959 following a failed uprising against Chinese rule.

Takhla said the Dalai Lama was feeling much better now but has already cut down on travel in the past year as he has to take care of his health.

He usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight the Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China.

“Long-distance travelling is tiresome. Generally, he is in very good health. But he is taking precautions,” he told The Associated Press.

The Dalai Lama addressed a conference of educators and students in New Delhi last week.

Answering a question related to Tibet’s future with China, he reiterated that he is not seeking independence for Tibet, but would prefer a “reunion” with China under mutually acceptable terms.

The Dalai Lama has been hospitalized in the Indian capital New Delhi with a chest infection, but is in stable condition, according to an aide.
Spokesperson Tenzin Taklha said the Dalai Lama is medicated and likely to spend a day or two in the hospital.
"Today morning his holiness felt some discomfort and he was flown to Delhi for checkup," Taklha, his personal secretary, told Reuters.
"Doctors have diagnosed him with chest infection and he is being treated for that. His condition is stable now. He will be treated for two three days here."
The Tibetan spiritual leader flew from Dharmsala for consultations with doctors in the capital and was hospitalized on Tuesday. The north Indian hill town has been his headquarters since he fled Tibet in 1959 following a failed uprising against Chinese rule.
Seen as 'dangerous separatist' by China
He told Reuters last month that it was possible that once he dies his incarnation could be found in India, and warned that any other successor named by China would not be respected.
Many of the up to 100,000 Tibetans living in India are worried that their fight for a genuinely autonomous homeland could end with the Dalai Lama.
China, which took control of Tibet in 1950, brands the Nobel peace laureate a dangerous separatist and has said its leaders have the right to approve the Dalai Lama's successor, as a legacy inherited from China's emperors.
But many Tibetans, whose tradition holds that the soul of a senior Buddhist monk is reincarnated in the body of a child on his death, see any Chinese role as a ploy to exert influence on the community.
The Dalai Lama spends several months a year travelling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight the Tibetans' struggle for greater freedom in China.
