Calls for Li Peng's son to resign over alleged toxic spill cover-up

Internet users in China have called for the resignation of Li Xiaopeng, the acting governor of northern Shanxi province and the son of controversial former premier Li Peng, over an alleged coverup of a toxic chemical spill that contaminated drinking water in neighboring Hebei province.

Local residents and netizens became angry after it was revealed that Li, whose father oversaw the army's crackdown on the Tiananmen student protesters in June 1989, took five days to issue a public warning regarding the spill, even though the downstream city of Handan in Hebei had already been forced to cut off its water supply over safety concerns. The 53-year-old Li is expected to be officially appointed governor of Shanxi by the provincial congress in the near future.
