Only those who have something to hide will refuse to disclose the size of national reserves.
Don't blame the citizens for suspecting:
1. The size of the reserves are smaller than reported
2. The govt does not know the actual size of the reserves. It will take 100 man-years to tally.
3. The reserves have been siphoned off. But, of course, there is no corruption in Singapore....
4. The reserves have been misspent on spendings that should not have been permitted.

How can the size of the reserves be a state secret and cannot fall into the eyes of our enemy.
The pure fact that they have installed a President that jaga the reserves is already a safe guard.

I know not of any other democracy that boasts or hold truth to the fact they have "reserves" which they can dip into.

Just to clarify on the emboldened part.
100 man-years = 100 men X 1 year, or 200 men X 0.5 years, or 400 men X 0.25 years, or 1000 men X 0.10 years.
So yeah, that's not a big issue.
The excuse given by eunuch Loong for not disclosing the true size of the reserves, which means the sum of MAS reserves + Temasek reserves + GIC reserves, is that speculators can attack stinkypoor dollar.
Only GIC reserves are not publicly revealed, the rest is. In any case, most of these reserves are invested in liquid and non liquid investments abroad.
Mostly in Tiongkok, Yankee territory, elsewhere in west, Asia etc.
Which means stinky-poor-ah is still at the mercy of bigger powers. Should they wish to seize stinky-poor-ah assets and nationalize them on grounds of national security or some such. Maybe due to CECA virus spread from stinky-poor-ah. Or Chink virus?
