The world's fourth largest PC maker will lay off some local staff and appoint a new regional head as a result of the move. The company declined to disclose the number of job losses expected here.
A Lenovo spokesman said the firm is consolidating its China and Asia-Pacific organisations, which have been run until now as separate business units.
The new single region will be known as Asia Pacific and Russia. She added: 'We've streamlined our organisation as part of the restructuring. The new organisation will help the company reduce its operating expense and eliminate duplicative support and staff functions.'
Singapore has been Lenovo's Asia-Pacific base since 2005, serving also as its Asean headquarters and global headquarters for treasury operations. Its worldwide supply chain and services heads and chief information officer are based here.
It has about 200 staff who are located mainly at its New Tech Park office in Lorong Chuan.
The new consolidated unit will be headed by Mr Chen Shaopeng, currently senior vice-president and president of Greater China. Mr David Miller, its senior vice-president and president of Asia-Pacific, will remain here for a 'transition period'.
Last week, Lenovo announced that it was culling 2,500 jobs - about 11 per cent - from its global workforce over the next two months. This was being done to cope with falling demand, after a faster-than-expected slowdown in the Chinese economy affected sales.
Apart from slashing jobs, Lenovo said it was also trimming its wage bill, with remaining executives taking a pay cut of between 30 and 50 per cent. These changes are set to enable Lenovo to cut costs by US$300 million (S$448 million) for its fiscal year ending March 31 next year. It also anticipates booking a pre-tax restructuring charge of US$150 million.

50 %?! Hmm that's really hard. But things like this are pretty common in the US and the EU.

Cost of salaries in Singapore are too high compared to third world countries.

Every company in order to make bigger profits will outsource their non essential positions.

Why would a Chinese company have its AP HQ in Singapore in the first place.?

Answer: The Angmo CEO did not want to relocate his family to China. He flies for the working week and returns to Singapore on just before the weekend.

With recession, hard to build a strategy around one family for such a large company. Glad the dumb Chinese directors finally woke up.

There are plenty of jobs at the shipyards and also security industry (guards) available.

You Singaporeans are just too pampered. In my home country it is not uncommon to find mid-level executives with a second job or own business.

Innovation and new ideas is lacking here.

Exactly. People here are damn lazy and only know how to complain.

They are too pampered like spoilt brats.

The attitude of the foreigners working here are much better as seen with my own eyes.

Ya I agree. The scholars should be leaving in doves to get second job and do own biz. Or are we paying them too much?

They are probably just lazy and too pampered, these scholars.

The scholars will specialise in research and knowledge acquisition.

A small nation like Singapore needs to identify and groom leaders.

Leaders are made and not born. Giving leadership opportunities to bright young minds is an excellent scheme.

Instead of training a fresh college graduate, foreigners come here with a specialised skill and good experience. It just makes more sense for many companies.

Why should SG compare to 3rd world countries? We should try to be competitive among 1st world economies, instead of competing with cheap cost of 3rd countries

You really talk cock and sing song. That is why S'pore is Sinking fast. You are a PAPPIE.

You have more people like Tio Si Luck to lead the young clowns wannabe and the whole of Singapore will turn into a circus.

Heard the recent trip to China for the "youths" had the chinese laughing in stitches. You want this type to lead the country?

Have you not heard this saying:

"Youth and Brawn Is No Match For Old Age Acquired Wisdom".

 you seem pretty perceptive. Actually the Caucasian CEO is severely misinformed about China, thanks to the bad press it receives in the (usually biased) Western media that I don't deny despite my background.

Shanghai for example is a modern, cosmopolitan city with people coming to work and lodge from all over the world, including the West. And, you don't really need to speak Mandarin to get by there.

And it certainly goes without saying that if the Asian economy is still a bustling one like the early to mid 90s things like this would surely be overlooked and would continue onwards relentlessly :p.
