Not eating meat is more to cultivate compassion. How can you love and eat the same animal (e.g pet dog).
The Buddha did not restrict meat eating as certain place like Tibetan highland may have difficulty getting greens. And those going on alms are suppose to eat whatever that was offered. However under situation when monks or nuns need to eat meat (sickness or malnutrition), they could. In event where they suspect that the animal is intentionally killed for them, they can reject the food.
After all it's very much the call of the very individual... Buddhism to me cultivate compassion, mindfulness and most important wisdom....
May all be well and happy......
