SINGAPORE - The managing director of ornamental fish exporter Qian Hu Corporation, Kenny Yap Kim Lee, was fined $3,200 and banned from driving for 25 months on Thursday (Jan 21) for drink driving.

The 50-year-old pleaded guilty to driving his car along Crawford Steet at about 11.50pm on New Year's Day (Jan 1) when he had at least 78 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 mcg in 100ml of breath.

"I was being irresponsible. It was a lapse of judgment and I am willing to accept the punishment and would like to move on," Mr Yap told The Straits Times over the phone.

A traffic court heard that he was driving along Crawford Street that night when he was stopped for checks at a police road block.

A police officer approached him and noticed that he smelt of alcoholic breath, had bloodshot eyes and a flushed face.

He failed the breathalyzer test and was arrested.

He was taken to Traffic Police for another breath test.

Investigation showed that he had consumed an unknown amount of beer at a restaurant at Golden Mile between 8pm and 11pm. He then left and was on his way home when he was stopped at the police road block.

He could have been fined up to $5,000 or jailed for up to six months.
