After eight years of unfinished apartment construction in Johor Bahru, many victims in the Lion City went to the embankment to seek explanation.

"Give us back our hard-earned money! Give us back the coffin!" About 100 victims of an unfinished high-end apartment in Johor, Malaysia, including many injured owners from Singapore who specially crossed the embankment, gathered in Johor Bahru today (22nd) to pay tribute to the unfinished building. The development discussed the issue and hoped to solve the problem of unfinished apartments through local councillors.
According to the reporter of "8 Vision News Network", this unfinished building project located in the coastal area of Baiwan Town, Johor Bahru was originally scheduled to be completed at the end of 2018, but now it has become an abandoned project. Construction contractors changed again and again, and many owners waited for nearly eight years to no avail.
The reporter also went to Johor Bahru today (22nd) to understand the situation. About a hundred victims from Singapore and Malaysia gathered there to meet with Johor Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim, hoping to find a solution with the help of the government.

About one-third of the buyers are Singaporeans

It is understood that at least one-third of the buyers of the project are Singaporeans. About 20 owners from the Lion City also made a special trip across the embankment from Singapore this morning (22nd) to attend the rally of aggrieved owners. When interviewed, they complained that although the apartment project had been put on hold, the bank interest still had to be paid back, accusing the developer of being irresponsible.

47-year-old Luo Shaozhong said that he and his 41-year-old wife Sun Minyi bought a unit worth more than one million ringgit (approximately S$288,075) in this project in October 2016. They originally wanted to buy it because of its superior location. It was used to provide for the elderly, but unexpectedly, it has now become a "gnawing at the elderly".
"The construction was stopped, but the bank continued to ask us to repay the loan. The monthly interest now is 1,600 ringgit (approximately S$460). We asked the bank why it asked us to continue to repay the loan before the construction was completed. They replied that it was for development. The dealer told us to pay it back. If we don’t do so, we will be declared bankrupt and entering Malaysia will be a problem.”
Today (22nd), 56-year-old Zeng Guofen crossed the embankment with his wife and aunt. The aunt also bought a unit in the development project. It is understood that his aunt has paid about 70% of the mortgage.

"Now I am more disappointed than angry. We have heard that the developer has put a sum of money with the Malaysian government. If the development does not succeed, the money will be used to compensate us, but we don't know who to ask for the money."

Suffering owner who used his pension to buy a house: I don’t know how long it will take to make money back

Mr. Cai, a 56-year-old sufferer who is also from Singapore, revealed that he used his pension when buying a house. It was originally for retirement, but now the project has become an unfinished building. He frankly said that he does not know how long he will have to work to earn back the money in the future.
"It's all hard-earned money. As an ordinary migrant worker, it's really hard for me. You can see (the house), but you can't live in it."
When interviewed, 54-year-old Eunice also said that she had consulted a lawyer and wanted to solve the problem through legal means. However, the lawyer had no choice but to tell her that the process would be very long and may be fruitless in the end.

Malaysian MP: Help report issues to the minister

Johor Pasir Gudang MP Hasan Karim arrived at the site of the unfinished building at about 3 o'clock today (22nd) and met with the affected owners at a nearby restaurant and also responded to the owners' inquiries.

In an interview with the media, he said that he would regard the problem of the victims as his own problem and promised to report the problem to the Malaysian Deputy Minister of Local Government Development Akmal.
"This is my first meeting with the owner. As a member of Parliament, I will report the incident to the deputy minister responsible for the unfinished building project. I will also urge the government to appoint a new contractor and be accountable to the government."
However, he also reminded the owners that if the appointment of a new contractor succeeds, they may have to face fines. If the homeowners want to see the project resume, they may have to consider giving up pursuing fines from the developers. At the same time, the developers may propose New additional agreements, these are all things owners must consider.

The whole building is probably infested with hantus now. Since it has been unoccupied, the hantus will make it their abode.
