YD Jarrod Luo snubbed by WP Sylvia Lim

The National University of Singapore Students' Political Association (NUSPA) and Socialist Democratic Club recently organised a policy forum - "Policy Face-off - Immigration Policies: How many is enough?"

The Facebook event wall stated: "All Staff / Students need to flash their Staff ID / Matriculation Card to gain entry into the venue." (See facebook event)

Interestingly, Jarrod Luo from the Young Democrats, youth wing of Singapore Democratic Party, managed to enter the theatrette.

Jarrod Luo was quick to pose a question to Ms. Sylvia Lim, Chairman of Workers' Party, regarding her views on Minimum Wage, in a brazen attempt to challenge her. Some of the participants were puzzled because the forum was dealing with "Immigration Policy", and the question appeared out of topic.

Charismatic as she is, Ms. Sylvia Lim snubbed Jarrod Luo, by disagreeing with Jarrod Luo's view that Minimum Wage policy should be enforced in Singapore. Ms. Sylvia Lim even went to the extent of agreeing with the PAP Government's take on Minimum Wage. After this "smack-in-the-face" response, Jarrod Luo hurriedly retreated to his seat. It's interesting to see how shallow Jarrod Luo appeared to be. Perhaps just reiterating the party's stand on Minimum Wage, Jarrod Luo didn't seem to be able to convince the audience on Minimum Wage policy.

Jarrod Luo could have read more about Workers' Party before jumping on to Ms. Sylvia Lim.

In the Workers' Party Manifesto 2006, under the heading of "Labour Policy and CPF", it was stated that "* The minimum wage in Collective Agreements should be strictly enforced. Union leaders should educate employees on their minimum wage and to make a report if they have been "short-changed"."

Minimum Wage Policy and "minimum wage in Collective Agreements" are both different issues.

By not understanding counterparts in the opposition, Jarrod Luo humiliated himself in the theatrette, with close to 300 staring at him.

Forumers point out Jarrod Luo's involvement in Sunshine Empire
Forumers have pointed out Jarrod Luo's (Honorary Secretary of Young Democrats - Youth wing of Singapore Democratic Party) involvement in the Ponzi Scheme Sunshine Empire.

Click on link below to find out more:

Forumers have found photos of Jarrod Luo with Sam Mok, who is the Managing Director of Sunshine Empire.

In one photo, Jarrod Luo is pictured side by side Sam Mok, and wearing a tag, with a Forwin88.com image in the background. Forwin88.com is believed to be a splinter of Sunshine Empire.

About Sunshine Empire

Sunshine Empire is a defunct company, with all assets frozen by the Singapore Government. The Founder and CEO are currently on trial for running fraudulent trades and investment schemes.

It was set up in 2006 as a Multi Level Marketing (MLM) company, based Singapore.

The company is listed by the Singapore Government's Monetary Authority in its Investor's Alert List, for possibly running investment schemes without authority.

Following months of investigation by the Commercial Affairs Department of the Singapore Police, Sunshine Empire's Directors will appear on trial at Singapore's Subordinate Courts in March 2009 for falsifying accounts, making false capital declarations and running a fraudulent trade.

The company had gathered up to S$189 million in funds through investment schemes, alleged to have never materialised and in fact a Ponzi scheme. Initial trial revealed that over S$115m were paid out as 'investment returns', while another S$40m were transferred to associates as 'interest free loans' and the remaining believed to have been expended or paid out to directors as fees.

It is not known if Jarrod Luo had been an active multilevel marketer at Sunshine Empire. Jarrod Luo is estimated to have joined the SDP after Sunshine Empire is investigated by the authorities. Could his SDP membership be a result of his discontent with how the authorities clamped down on Sunshine Empire?

We believe that Jarrod Luo had a name change or rather adopted an English name after Sunshine Empire got into trouble.

Repeated attempts of contacting Jarrod Luo have not been successful. At least Sheng Siong responded with a rejection. Jarrod Luo didn't even reply.

Jarrod Luo is the Honorary Secretary of Young Democrats.

Excerpts from his facebook:

"... I'm currently working at a friend's company, training to be an assistant manager, as well as running some business on the sidelines..."

Businessman! Young Entrepreneur. Then I saw these photos:

Club Forwin website (http://www.forwin88.com/) shows that it's an online gambling site.

This is further confirmed by this forum --> http://www.onlinegamblingforum.org/showthread.php?t=6120

Online gambling is illegal in Singapore & in some other countries such as the United Kingdom. Is this why SDP hasnt been championing against the opening of the IR casinoes, unlike WP and SDA?

This adds questions to the way SDP picks its "talents". Do they screen their candidates?

As a key office holder, Jarrod Luo stands a chance to be put up by the party for elections. Is this your party, your voice?

Actually, I'm also sceptical about minimum wage policy. How to force employers to pay a certain wage if it means deficits (euphemistically). Realistically, it means businesses making losses. If not with a view to making profits, then be in business for what?

Collective minimum wage agreement is different. It was borne out of trade union movements during the Industrial Revolution in England. The capitalist bosses came to a point where they could pay as unreasonably little wages as they want whilst reaping enormous profits. That was the situation caused by industrialisation birth pangs. The landed gentry and aristocracy jumped upon it and continued to dominate England's economy. There's no bargaining power on the part of the individual worker. If you didn't want the job at this wage, there'd be plenty who'd take it.

So in came the trade union movement and collective wage agreement. Alone, no worker have any threatening or bargaining power to redress the situation. But grouped up, i.e. if one don't work, the other hundred or thousand also don't work, the capitalist industralists was forced to negotiate more reasonable and humane terms relative to social conditions instead of just one-way economics maximise profits.

S passes and EP holders have minimum wage of 1800 and 2500 in the respective policy in Singapore. But our employers never adhere to such a rule and cheat on MOM by getting them in and lowering the wages below legal requirements. How to enforce? Gan Kim Yong also want easy job, he won't approve minimum wage. Otherwise he needs to monitor all the employers and hurled them all to court for violated the policy. Kangaroo Judge will also have no peace of mind after that.

You are right. From first hand knowledge, they employ these foreigners at the minimum wages, then they play around the working hours, example needing them to work shifts and weekends and public holidays. In the end, it works out lower than the stated figures

Labour Unions are headed by PAP Men....

How could wages catchup with skyrocketing HDB prices?

Exactly. The first and foremost thing LKY did was not not crush the communists but to take over the unions. Where else in the world can you find a country, list more than GDP US$30,000 p.a. per capita, executive entry level job ads list S$1,600 p.m. and manual job ads list S$800 p.m.?

The problem is that this GDP/wages connection is Greek to the man in the street.

It's all abstract stuff to them unless extremely patient and painstaking education is undertaken.

Perhaps the Ah Beng should ask what exactly does the WP stand for:

1. WP candidates that vote for PAP?
2. WP leader that insinuate other opposition as "mad dog"
3. WP leader that remains silent when asked point blank if the inept lackey WKS should resign.
4. WP chairman that says Singapore laws are fair and just.

This is just a suggestion, but perhaps the Ah Beng should ask himself what exactly is he voting for when he casts a protest vote. Please don't let others treat you as the idiots you really are.

........

Ramseth,

implementing minimum wage will means that a more levelled playing field in terms of pay. Means no more incentive to hire cheaper foregin workers, but it will also means inflation, aka your favourtie chicken rice will be $7.50 a plate instead of $3.50, cos we need to pay the poor bloke a decent wage.

Thats what 1st & developed countries do, pay the working blokes a decent wage.

This is a minimum wage to qualify for an employment pass.

The other minimum wage everyone is talking about is a minimum wage for all... regardless of what employment pass you have or don't have (citizens).

Obviously they are very different things and you are trying to confuse people by insinuating there is a minimum wage for foreigners (though not enforced) and none for singaporeans.... very mischievous of you.
