SINGAPORE: An odd-job worker was on Tuesday jailed four years and sentenced to six strokes of the cane for his part in an assault that left two men injured.

40-year-old Soh Ying Kuan had been part of a group of nine people who attacked brothers Yap Tien Sze, 39, and Yap Tian Seng, 50.

The court heard that on May 4, 2013, the brothers -- together with their families and friends -- were having dinner at a hawker centre in Redhill Road.

Around 11pm, while they were drinking and toasting each other, the younger Mr Yap was confronted by Soh and his gang.

Soh and the gang hurled Hokkien vulgarities at Mr Yap, accusing him and his group of talking loudly in the gang's territory.

When Mr Yap said it was a public place and that he did not want any trouble, the gang began raining punches and kicks on both Yap brothers.

The brothers were also hit multiple times on the head and back with beer bottles. The ordeal lasted some five minutes before they were able to run away.

The gang gave chase but did not catch up with the brothers.

Two of the others identified in the assault -- Tay Poh Loon, 37, and Teo Mui Meng, 40 -- are on the run while the remaining six could not be identified.

In passing sentence, District Judge Low Wee Ping said that while the victims did not suffer grievous injuries, the manner in which the violence was executed was an aggravating factor.

Soh could have been jailed up to seven years and caned for the offence. - CNA/ac
