A man from northern China tried to hide cash from his wife in a quilt, but it was chewed up and destroyed by the couple’s puppy, a newspaper reported.

The husband from Lushun in Liaoning province put 3,800 yuan (HK$4,500) in 100 yuan notes in the quilt, according to the Peninsula Morning Post.

It was later discovered by his five-month-old puppy Harry who tried to eat it.

Pictures posted online show an innocent looking Harry and a completely torn up quilt, along with the chewed up banknotes.

It was not the first time Harry had destroyed things in the home, according to the article.

He had also chewed up the corner of a sofa and a wallet.

The couple is planning to give him up for adoption, the report said.

An elderly woman from southeast China thought her hard-earned cash would be safe secreted away in a small box in her home, only to recently discover it had been shredded into ribbons, state media reports.

The resident of Nanping city in Fujian province had pinched her pennies over the years to amass about 40,000 yuan (US$6,080 or HK$47,210), China News Service said on Tuesday.

She kept the cash and her bank books in a wooden box in her attic, and everything was fine when she last checked early last year. But when she looked again this month, she found only pieces of torn-up paper.

She called the police, who after investigating, discovered the culprits – ants had crawled into the box and formed a nest. The banknotes and savings books had proved an ideal source of food for the insects.

Neither the woman’s name nor her age were provided in the report.
