Amnesty International’s Crisis Response Programme gathered compelling evidence documenting the use of white phosphorus artillery shells by the Israeli army in densely populated civilian areas in Gaza, many of which may be considered unlawful indiscriminate attacks.
Following the attacks on civilians in Israel by Hamas and other armed groups on 07 October, the Israeli army has been bombarding Gaza at an unprecedented rate. Videos and photos verified by Amnesty International’s Crisis Evidence Lab indicate that Israel has been using white phosphorus ammunition.
White phosphorus is an incendiary substance mostly used to create a dense smoke screen or mark targets. It burns at extremely high temperatures when exposed to air, and can continue to burn inside flesh. It causes horrific pain and life-changing injuries, and cannot be put out with water.
On 09 October, the Israeli Defence Forces positioned M109 155mm Howitzers next to the city of Sderot, which had been previously attacked by Hamas and sits about one kilometre away from the Israel/Gaza border fence.
Several of these verified photos show M825 and M825A1 artillery shells, which are also labelled D528, the US Department of Defense Identification Code (DODIC) for white phosphorus-based rounds.
M109 howitzers have a range of approximately 18-22km. From Sderot, this puts the northern half of the Gaza Strip within range.
In recent days, several pieces of video evidence suggest the use of 155mm white phosphorus artillery shells in northern Gaza. In particular, the Crisis Evidence Lab team was able to verify the attack that took place on Gaza harbour and nearby hotels, as can be seen in this video, posted on October 11.
The same attack can be seen from another angle in this video, where white phosphorus ammunition is seen being used in tandem with what seem to be standard high explosive artillery shells.
Additional video evidence available also show artillery shells exploding in mid-air, and releasing thick white smoke-producing particles – which is consistent with the use of M825 and M825A1 artillery shells.
This video, also posted on 11 October, was geolocated at the following coordinates – 31.518279° 34.445217° – near the Bank of Palestine Tower, in the heavily-damaged district of Zeitoun, near Aljondy Almajhool Park.
Amnesty International is currently reviewing further evidence of the potential use of white phosphorus ammunition in northern Israel and Lebanon.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) says the Israeli military recently used white phosphorus munitions in Lebanon and Gaza.
“White phosphorous is unlawfully indiscriminate when airburst in populated urban areas, where it can burn down houses and cause egregious harm to civilians,” Lama Fakih, Middle East and North Africa director at HRW, said in a statement.
In an apparent denial of HRW’s report, the Israeli military said on Friday that it has made no use of white phosphorus in its Gaza war this week.
“The current accusation made against the IDF [Israel Defence Forces] regarding the use of white phosphorus in Gaza is unequivocally false,” it said in a statement.
Its ability to ignite fast-spreading fires and create thick smoke over wide areas has made white phosphorus a substance of choice for militaries to create smokescreens. The smoke tends to last for seven minutes.
It is often colourless, white or yellow, and has a garlic-like odour.
White phosphorus munitions are difficult to extinguish, continuing to flare until the phosphorous has been burned up or until it is no longer exposed to oxygen.
It can be deployed through artillery shells, bombs, rockets or grenades.
“Airbursting white phosphorus spreads the substance over a wide area, depending on the altitude of the burst, and it exposes more civilians and infrastructures than a localized ground burst,” Ahmed Benchemsi, communications director for HRW’s Middle East and North Africa Division, told Al Jazeera.
“The burns have a double effect. They have a local effect because of the burn itself, which is generally quite severe and very deep, and then the second effect is metabolic, which can kill the patients,” said Roman Hossein Khonsari, professor of maxillofacial surgery and plastic surgery at Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital in Paris.
He said metabolic disorders can include abnormal potassium levels that cause heart failure.
Khonsari, who worked in Yerevan during the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan, said that if burns are not identified by doctors as being caused by white phosphorus, the victim may not receive the necessary care for organ failure risks.
Khonsari also explained that phosphorus burns continue to pierce the skin and will reach the bone unless the substance is properly washed out.
White phosphorus, which can stick to many surfaces, such as clothes, can also reignite if it comes into contact with the skin again.
It can also be lethal if inhaled, and the fumes can severely irritate eyes and make them sensitive to light.

White phosphorus is not explicitly banned by international conventions — though its use in a dense, civilian population is considered illegal by many legal scholars. Protocol III of the 1980 Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons prohibits incendiaries or the use of other substances to attack civilian populations.
To sum it up, I tell you that this world would be a better place to live in if there is no religious faith at all. That's because those extreme religious fanatics will always claim and want theirs to be the best of the best and cannot accept being discriminated.
