Man of Steel breaks box office records on US release

The Superman reboot has made $125m on its opening weekend in the US, lining it up to be the year's highest-grossing film

Superman reboot Man of Steel looks on course to be one of the year's highest-grossing movies after securing a gravity-defying $196.7m (£125.7m) global box office opening at the weekend.

Man of Steel
Production year: 2013
Countries: Rest of the world, USA
Cert (UK): 12A
Runtime: 143 mins
Directors: Zack Snyder
Cast: Amy Adams, Christopher Meloni, Diane Lane, Henry Cavill, Kevin Costner, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe
More on this film
Directed by 300 and Watchmen's Zack Snyder and starring Britain's Henry Cavill in the title role, the film leaped to a gargantuan $125.1m (£79.5m) in the US, the largest opening of all time there for the month of June. It pulled in equally high-bounding figures for such territories as the UK ($17.1m [£10.8m]), South Korea ($9.9m [£6.2m]) and Mexico ($9.8m [£6.2m]). The film opens in another 26 countries next weekend and should benefit from a strong second weekend, bolstered by decent reviews.

The strong performances will come as some relief to studio Warner Brothers, which has struggled to get a truly successful Superman movie off the ground ever since the halcyon days of Richard Donner's Superman, from 1978. Three subsequent sequels, all starring Christopher Reeve, produced ever-diminishing critical returns. An attempt to bring Krypton's last son back to the big screen in the form of Brandon Routh with 2006's Superman Returns largely failed to resurrect interest on a large scale.

Man of Steel was overseen by the team behind The Dark Knight and the studio's other recent Batman films, screenwriter David Goyer and Christopher Nolan (shifting from director to a producer's role). It looks likely to outperform the 2008 Dark Knight, which it is outpacing by 40% outside the US. A haul in excess of $1bn (£637m) (The Dark Knight's total) would place it on course to challenge Iron Man 3 ($1.2bn [£763m]) for the mantle of the year's highest-grossing film so far.

Snyder's film stars Russell Crowe as Superman's father, Jor-El, with Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as his adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent. Michael Shannon plays the villain, Zod, who follows Kal-El to Earth following the destruction of the planet Krypton.

man of steel is so awesome. The fight scene and action are so epic. The music fit so well.

the only explanation of the rotten tomatoes critic rating are the awesome and misleading trailers.

The last 45mins for just one long CGI fest. Generally, it was an entertaining movie but I have 2 criticisms:

1) No humor. Maybe a little dark for my liking probably due to Nolan's influence.
2) Superman does not KILL! so WTF was the ending all about?

zack snyder want to make a new superman not made a improved old superman with better CGI.
That is why the name of the movie is man of steel. And S is hope, not super.
You must go to this movie with the mind set that this is not the superman of the comic or the old movie or the animation.
This is a new superman. He is different. If you have that mindset, this movie kick ass.

The critics are fxxking crazy, i seen it and no way it is suppose to be that low, high expectation due to the trailer that was not met.
