SINGAPORE - Police arrested seven men and two women, between the ages of 48 and 59 years old, for operating and gaming in an illegal gambling den in Geylang yesterday.

In a five-hour operation which started at about 10.00pm on Dec 4, officers from Bedok Police Division and Immigration & Checkpoints Authority raided a private apartment unit located at Geylang Road.

Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the male suspects, aged 59, had rented the private apartment unit for the purpose of gambling, while the remaining suspects are believed to be patrons.

Twenty-three modified computers and cash amounting to about $1,334 were seized.

The 59-year-old male suspect along with two 52-year-old male subjects and a 53-year-old female subject will be charged in court on Dec 6.

Investigations against the remaining suspects are on-going.

Any person convicted of operating an illegal gambling den shall be guilty on conviction to a fine of up to $50,000 and shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years.

Those convicted of gaming illegally shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or to both.
