About 20,000 of the swings, which were made in Vietnam, were sold worldwide.
Ikea has recalled its Gunggung children’s swing after reports of incidents occurring when the suspension fittings broke, posing “a risk of serious injury”.
Customers will receive a full refund of HK$199.90 if they return the item to any Ikea store. Proof of purchase is not required. The polyester swing, designed for children aged three to seven, has been available in Hong Kong since March 1.
“The suspension fittings can break in use. A child can fall from the swing,” Ikea said in a statement.”
The swing is designed for indoor and outdoor use by children aged three to seven. It is made of green fabric and hangs from a plastic suspension fitting attached to steel hooks.
There have been four reports of the fittings breaking, comprising one in Germany, two in Austria and one in Canada. In one incident a child fell and broke a leg, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.
“It was tested and met all the applicable safety regulations,” Ikea spokeswoman Daniel Rogosic said, adding that the company was investigating the cause of the fault.
“Even though it was tested, it doesn’t meet the requirements of our customers or us as a company ... Safety is the highest priority for all our products.”
About 20,000 of the swings, which were made in Vietnam, were sold worldwide.
