Expats vote Singapore the best place in the world to live and work

Singapore has topped a poll of the best places in the world to live and work for expatriates.

Singapore was chosen because it provided the right balance of career opportunities and lifestyle as well as a stable economy, according to HSBC's latest Expat Explorer.

Confidence in Singapore's economy is the highest compared to all other countries the survey showed. More than seven in ten expats in Singapore (79 per cent) are confident about its economy compared to a global average of just 48 per cent.

Expats also also found Singapore is appealing to entrepreneurs seeking to start up a business abroad, the suvery showed.

The HSBC Expat Explorer sought the views of 21,950 respondents from 39 countries asking respondents to rank countries based on career prospects, financial wellbeing, quality of life and ease of settling for partners and children.

Singapore is the top destination for expats based on its rankings amongst the three broad categories of economics, experience and family.

Matthew Colebrook, head of retail banking and wealth management, HSBC Singapore, said, "Singapore provides the perfect blend of career and lifestyle which makes it a preferred destination for expats, and this is clearly supported by the findings in the HSBC report."

According to the Expat Explorer, more than half (59 per cent) of expats believe Singapore is a good place for career advancements and 53 per cent believe they are able to acquire new skills more so in Singapore than at home.

Singapore also offers a better quality of life overall than in their home country according to 67% of respondents and 65% acknowledge that their children's health and wellbeing has improved since they have moved.

Expats surveyed acknowledge that Singapore offers better quality education for their children even though it is more expensive. Over four in five (85 per cent) say that education is more expensive but 66 per cent believe that the quality of education in Singapore is better than in their home country.

More than half of expats in Singapore say it is easy to set up finances (63 per cent) and healthcare (63 per cent). Three-quarters (75 per cent) say their social life is either just as active or more so than at home and 57 per cent also say they find it easy to adapt to the local culture and lifestyle.

According to the report, 87 per cent of expats living in Singapore say it is a good place to start a new business, which is much higher than the global average of 56 per cent. Singapore's regulatory environment also allows entrepreneurs to start a small business in only a few days1.

Said Mr Colebrook: "Singapore has worked hard to position itself as attractive for business. It is pleasing to see that its economic and political stability and general pro-business approach is being recognised by entrepreneurs globally."

If entrepreneurs recognized sinkapore as the best place for business, then they would have been flocking here years ago. Where is our Silicon Valley? Stupid angmo!

Mr. Colebrook should be kicked out of sinkapore.

Bro, for working and living, Singapore is very very well positioned. For business opportunities, that depends on the field of business, but for stable, safe living, it is rated well.

Worked in a European MNC many years back, one night, the CEO invited us to his home, a nice bungalow in Bt. Timah where his wife told us, at first they were posted to Jakarta, where she visited the hospital, and wasn't very pleased with what she saw, then upon their transfer to Singapore, she visited Gleneagles hospital, was impressed and decided that they'd start their family in Singapore, which they did. Swiss Club membership, good laws, orderly society, renowned schools. Obviously Singapore was a good choice for them.

Cheers!

Expats are not stupid. Singapore is a very good place for expats, the wealthy, and middle to upper class foreigners in general. Even PRs and new citizens should find the system to their liking - no NS for them, free and unfettered access to our jobs, our flats, and our infrastructure.

If I was a foreigner I would love Singapore, and despise Singaporeans for trying to speak out against 6.9 million,

If I got all those perks, sinkapore would be the best too. Now, if they are given hardship allowance doubling his income, they would gladly stay in Jakarta.

If I am Chilean, would they treat me well? The shortest affordable route to be a foreigner is to emigrate to Chile.

They have it even better than back home in Europe. Here, they have a maid. Husband has am easy job, just making yes/no decisions, approving projects, and being VIP at company's annual dinner and dance, its the locals who do the hard work. Wife socializes with upper crust society, hangs out with other socialites at country clubs, shops at Orchard Road, shows her face at some charity/social events, attends fashion shows. They might receive the same perks in Jakarta or Manila, Bangkok, but in Singapore, they get by easily speaking English. ALL the road signs in Singapore are in English, unlike other Asian countries!

Cheers!

Company pays his rent. And his Audi. And Swiss Club membership. He was a happy man, and treated his staff well, and they all returned his concern with their hardwork and dedication. I once overheard a couple of other angmohs in the company who were talking behind his back saying, "You might be able to do his work, but your eyes ain't of the right shade of blue!"

Cheers!

agree. with all company perks, benefits, privileges and allowances plus the modernity, cleanliness, safety, security, convenience of such a friendly city, how can an expat not love sg? moreover, expats are looked up to, get higher priority service, are treated better by the gov, and of course, receive wide open legs from spg's. paradise is real.

I made a huge mistake leaving Singapore and ending up in Sheepland. If I could turn back the clock I'd be back to my beloved PAP in a flash.

It took a while to realise that the PAP is the best!
