Mr Avin Look told Mr Lee that his retired parents, who need regular follow-ups at polyclinics and specialist centres, say they pay a lot for non-standard prescribed medications because there are no generic ones in the market.

He wanted the Pioneer Generation benefits to be extended to such medicines as well, especially for the elderly.

Mr Lee replied that there are a lot of non-standard medicines like vitamin pills
. "So we have to be careful. But if the doctor thinks the non-standard item is essential, and your parents can't afford it, we have a scheme to subsidise them. Where do your parents live? Perhaps I can ask their MP to help them?"

sometime doctors prescribed medicine without knowing the cost of each medicine. Mr Avin(simi lanjeow name is this?) can ask doctors for generic one. I don't believe there no generic type, if really don't have, bring parents to Johor, medicine there cheaper. I understand his problem as my mom also on long term medication. initially one of her med cost $8 a pop, that $240 a month just on one medicine and there another 7 type to buy. found out it non-std medicine so next appointment tolong the specialist to find a cheaper generic type. take for 2 weeks then return to run test to see the new medicine is up to scratch, sibeh heng to cheaper medicine hold up.

pinkie himself never had to pay any $$ for anything in his whole life, even his cancer treatment must be taxpayers pick up the tab.

Doctors know exactly the cost of the prescription medicine, they have no incentive to prescribe the generic one to you because they are the one selling the medicine too. They earn more if they prescribe the original versus the generic. So, what incentive is there to save you money as it will cost them lost profits. this is a big flaw of the medical system.

In the UK, when I see a doctor, he makes a diagnosis and writes out a prescription, but I have to buy the medicine not from his clinic but from the pharmacy which is not owned by him. Usually, if it is a simple ailment, you can buy the medicine from Boots along with your shampoo, perfume, et cetera. No conflict of interest and that is the way it should be. Pay your MiniSTARs million dollar salaries and yet they cannot come up with or to be exact copy such a simple idea! So are they worth the money?

This Dispensing doctor system was ironically inherited from the Colonial days. The UK has reformed the process and made it more like the US. They have some way around it, as many doctors who order lab work or tests direct the patients to labs owned by themselves and other doctors. In 2005 Penang khaw was protecting this system like shit. I guess many elites and sons of elites were and are medical doctors. Not nice to make them lose profits. In fact a few MPs and Ministers like Vivian the Chindian, and Bargain Hen are actually medical doctors. god forbid the elites earn less money. Until the system is truly reformed, there will always be this conflict of interest system.

for private clinic i agree but govt hospital doctors have no incentive to sell you expensive medicine. anyway my mom specialist doc change her to a cheaper medicine. by the way, the expensive medicine was prescribed by another doc.

anyway, PC is only a PR exercise. Too many restrictions to be useful. It only cover those cheap cheap run of the mill medicine. i bet it still dont subsidised surgery procedures such as implanting stems or heart bypass. Somemore must use in conjuction with the blue CHAS card to qualify for certain subsidies.

Indeed. I see many GP clinics using fear-inducing ads to sell vaccines and drugs to gullible parents.
