YOUNG Japanese women are setting their sights on handsome monks as “good targets” for a heart-to-heart talk after the March 11 tsunami that struck the country last year, reported Sin Chew Daily.
It was reported that a publisher had also launched The Beautiful Monk Encyclopaedia and organised forums for fans.
An activity called the “Monks Healing Night” was well-received by participants, who were mostly women in their 20s and 30s.
During the activity, which could cost between 2,000 and 4,000 yen (RM76 to RM153), monks would recite prayers before drinking beer and having dinner with the participants. The monks were said to be popular because women found it easier to communicate with them, including sharing their worries.
Unlike monks in other countries, those in Japan are allowed to consume alcohol and meat. They can also get married.
