BEIJING: A third Canadian citizen has been detained in China, a Canadian newspaper reported Wednesday (Dec 19), amid a diplomatic spat between Beijing and Ottawa over the arrest of a Chinese telecom executive.
Canada's foreign ministry said it was "aware of a Canadian citizen" having been detained, according to the National Post, which cited a ministry spokesperson.

The spokesperson did not provide further details and did not suggest that the detention was linked to the arrest of Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou, the report said.

Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular press briefing that she had "not heard" about the reported detention.
The recent detentions of two Canadians has raised suspicions that Beijing is holding them in retaliation for Meng's Dec 1 arrest, though no link has officially been made between the cases.

Meng was released on bail last week in Vancouver pending a US extradition hearing on US fraud charges related to sanctions-breaking business dealings with Iran.
China has accused the other detainees - former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and China-based business consultant Michael Spavor - of activities "that endanger China's national security".
They were both detained on Dec 10.
Kovrig is a Hong Kong-based senior adviser at the International Crisis Group think tank, while Spavor facilitates trips to North Korea and helped former NBA star Dennis Rodman travel to the neighbouring country.
Beijing has threatened Canada with "grave consequences" if Meng is not freed and Chinese state-run media has lashed out at the arrest, saying it was politically motivated.
Ottawa has repeatedly said the arrest was not political but rather a judicial process in keeping with an extradition treaty with Washington.

Better still, detained them in death cells forever. China is communist, so this is the norm. No excuses, no explanation needed!

If China has guts, it would arrest US citizens. It doesn't have the guts, that's why it goes after Canada.

The request for arrest is from the US. Any law respecting country that has an extradition with US does NOT have the choice but to comply.

Third Canadian reportedly detained by Chinese authorities
The identity of the individual has not yet been revealed

A third Canadian national has reportedly been detained by Chinese authorities following Canada’s arrest of a top Huawei executive at the behest of the United States.
So far, no information has been released about this third individual. Canada’s foreign affairs department has only confirmed that it is aware a third citizen has been detained in China. Meanwhile, at a daily press briefing on Wednesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said that she was not aware of this new case.
The detention comes amid a dispute between Canada and China that was triggered by the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou at the Vancouver airport on December 1st. Meng was arrested at the request of authorities in the US, where the 46-year-old executive is wanted for allegedly violating sanctions against Iran.

Meng’s arrest has infuriated China which warned that Canada will face “serious consequences” if she is not quickly released. A few days later one Canadian national, a former diplomat named Michael Kovrig, was detained, followed soon by another Canadian, Michael Spavor, the founder of a non-profit that organizes trips and cultural exchanges with North Korea.
China has said that both men are being investigated on suspicion of “harming state security,” bringing that they may spend years in Chinese custody and be charged with espionage.

While Beijing has denied that there is any link between the detentions and Meng’s arrest, when asked last week about whether Kovrig’s detention was just a coincidence, former Canadian ambassador to China, Guy Saint-Jacques, did not hold back, saying:
“In China there are no coincidences. In this case it is clear the Chinese government wants to put maximum pressure on the Canadian government.”
