HTC One A9 to feature MediaTek's MT6797 deca-core CPU and 4GB of RAM

The HTC One A9 has been run through the Geekbench benchmark test, which confirmed talk that the manufacturer's new "Hero" phone will be powered by the MediaTek MT6797 SoC. That chipset includes a deca-core CPU. MediaTek is employing a Tri-Cluster design with dual 2.5GHz Cortex-A72 cores for heavy lifting, four 2GHz Cortex-A53 cores for medium housework, and four 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 cores for light housekeeping. Combined with the 20nm process used in production of the chip, the MT6797 uses 30% less energy than other high-end chipsets.
According to the Geekbench test, the chip scored an impressive 1835 for the single-core score, which nearly matched the 1903 tallied by the NVIDIA Tegra K1 used in the HTC built Nexus 9. On the multi-core part of the test, the MT6797 put up a figure of 5884. That tops the 5375 scored by the Exynos 7420 chipset used on the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge and the Samsung Galaxy S6.
With the Mali-T880 MP6 GPU handling graphics, the MT6797 appears to be a monster and should fuel an interesting battle between Qualcomm and MediaTek. Smartphone manufacturers are planning to use the Snapdragon 820 in 30 upcoming models, according to Qualcomm. But it would certainly be a feather in MediaTek's cap if the MT6797 were to power the HTC One A9 in the U.S., where MediaTek has been a non-factor.
As for HTC, this phone is supposedly the handset that will wipe the memory of the HTC One M9 out of phone buyers' minds. According to the test, the handset will be the first from HTC to carry 4GB of RAM. While the general public doesn't look at things like CPUs, RAM and benchmark tests, gaining strong support from smartphone fanatics can help build a base that HTC can use to help it recover.
