A dissatisfied hoverboard customer tried returning the device at a Texas mall on Monday, only to see it blow up in his face.

A hoverboard burst into flames inside a box as a customer tried returning the faulty self-balancing scooter at Deerbrook Mall on Monday afternoon, the Humble Fire Department told the Daily News.

The toy had all the signs pointing to a possible explosion: the device had a faulty battery and couldn’t hold a charge, the upset customer told the hoverboard merchant at the mall kiosk.

As the hoverboard salesman tried charging the device to prove the unhappy customer wrong, the self-balancing scooter exploded in a blaze, fire officials said.

Security evacuated the mall for about 45 minutes as staff put the flames out. There were no injuries reported.

“We thought it was a bomb going off at first,” Amanda Jones-Rucka wrote on her video capturing the heated accident.

The mall has re-opened since the evacuation.

It is unclear where the potentially explosive hoverboards are now.

Hoverboards have come with a major red flag since the devices started exploding from some poorly-made batteries.

The national Fire Marshals organization issued an advisory in early December, warning about the popular toy's heated habit.

Since Oct. 15, the UK’s National Trading Standards seized more than 15,000 hoverboards headed into the European Union, with an alarming 88% of all devices found to be dangerous due to its shoddy batteries.

The toys have also been blacklisted from Amazon’s market if they don’t meet safety standards.

The online shopping giant’s clean-up wiped out a whopping 97% of potentially dangerous hoverboards from its store.

The devices were also banned from several major American airlines in early December.

The self-balancing scooters have also been banned from New York City’s streets, as NYPD declared the devices as “unlawful motor vehicles” in public places.

Amazon pulls hoverboards over safety fears

Concerns over exploding batteries leads retailer to remove self-balancing scooters, demanding proof from manufacturers that products meet safety standards

Amazon has begun to pull some hoverboards from sale after fears about fires caused by the self-balancing scooters.

A number of hoverboards that had been sold on Amazon have now disappeared, including all five models once reviewed by consumer affairs site BestReviews. That site now warns would-be buyers that “for the time being, we are not recommending any hoverboards until they are proven to be safe”.

According to one hoverboard seller, Swagway, the online retailer has required manufacturers to provide documents proving that their vehicles “are compliant with applicable safety standards”, with particular focus on the battery and chargers for the units.

Like last Christmas’ must-have electronic gift, selfie sticks, most hoverboards are manufactured in bulk in China before being purchased in bulk by resellers who apply cosmetic retouching and branding. Unlike selfie sticks, however, hoverboards contain large batteries, which can be a serious hazard if they misfire.

Last week, a hoverboard exploded in a shopping mall in Washington state, sending shoppers into panic. Although no one was harmed, the explosion made headlines worldwide.

In early December, Britain’s trading standards authority warned buyers to beware, and revealed that 88% of the hoverboards imported from outside the EU, that it had tested, had failed basic safety checks.

At the time, Leon Livermore, chief executive of the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, said: “Criminals and irresponsible manufacturers will often exploit high demand and attempt to flood the market with cheap and dangerous products. Some products that are made abroad, principally for the overseas market, are not fitted with the correct plug and fuse for use in the UK. As a minimum, consumers should check that the three-pin plug on the device states it is made to BS1363. If it doesn’t include this information, then don’t buy the product.”

Buyers should also make sure they understand the legality of using a hoverboard, which cannot legally be ridden on the pavement or roadway in the UK.

Despite the name, hoverboards actually roll across the ground on wheels.

Hoverboard sparks house fire in Australia

Sydney (AFP) - An Australian family home was gutted when a hoverboard caught fire as it was charging, officials said Tuesday.

Authorities said the hoverboard -- a Christmas gift -- was plugged into the wall in a young girl's bedroom in Melbourne when it ignited.

The family were able to escape after a smoke alarm alerted them to the danger but the house was severely damaged.

Hoverboards -- in reality self-balancing electric scooters -- have surged in popularity and are now selling in Australia for as little as Aus$200 (US$150).

But concerns have arisen about the hazard they pose for street or sidewalk traffic, safety issues for riders, and reports that some poorly designed chargers can lead to fires.

In December the Australian consumer watchdog said it had two safety concerns with the products -- fires that have occurred overseas from the faulty design of some hoverboard chargers and user injuries by falls.

Hollywood star Russell Crowe was recently blocked from taking a hoverboard on a Virgin Australia flight, while several other airlines do not allow them.

The girl's father, Ash Ibraheim, said he had made sure the hoverboards he bought three of his four daughters for Christmas met Australian standards.

"We heard there were a lot of imported versions that weren't complying, so we wanted to make sure we got the right thing," he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

He said he was grateful that the fire, which was sparked about 10 minutes after the board had been plugged in to charge, did not start when the girls were sleeping.

"By the time the fire brigade came the whole house was on fire," he said.

Amazon Wants To Refund Your Potentially Explosive Hoverboard

Posted yesterday by Jordan Crook (@jordanrcrook)

If you know what a hoverboard is, chances are you know that they can be dangerous. Whether it comes to pulling a Mike Tyson (taking a hard fall) on the device or the fact that they sometimes catch fire at random, the hoverboard hasn’t particularly come off as the holiday season’s safest gift.

But today the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has released a statement explaining the various aspects of ongoing investigations into the two-wheeled balance boards. In conjunction, Amazon has agreed to give a full refund to anyone who purchased a hoverboard on the Amazon website, both in the United States and Canada.

Hoverboards launched onto the scene last year and quickly became one of the biggest consumer products of the holiday season. That said, they have this nasty habit of exploding and/or catching fire. There have been more than 40 reports of this type of incident in the last year, according to the CPSC.

These fires are said to be caused by sub-par lithium ion batteries and cheap manufacturing, but it’s not just the potential for fire that is under the CPSC’s microscope. The commission is also questioning whether hoverboards are safe for riding in general.
However, I am concerned, for example, that the current designs of these products might not take fully into consideration the different weights of different users, potentially leading to the units speeding up or lurching in a manner that a user would not have reason to anticipate, especially a first-time user. We are looking deeper into the design of these products to see if they present a hidden hazard that is leading to fall injuries that should not occur, even on a product that presents some risk of falling.

The CSPC is encouraging other retailers to offer their customers refunds and/or to stop selling the devices altogether.

the main reason why the chink export engine slows dramatically is because their products are so poor and unsafe that no one wants to buy made in china products that are not quality-assured by an outside oem anymore. this includes baby formula made in china. the entire milk industry in china has collapsed under its own greed and dishonesty. very soon it will be any gadgets with batteries in them.
