If WP had openly commented on this issue, they would have been accused of politicizing the issue in their own favour. This would have even further disrupted Mdm Vellama's court bid because it would become a partisan issue.

What was the incentive for the PAP to back off? There are questions for pondering.

If it was Whampoa or Mountbatten constituency that the MP had vacated and the NSP had made noise, will a BE be held?

If a resident there were to file a motion, will he be let off. (But a precedence is now set, so it's good.)

The issue of having or not having a by-election is a constitutional issue and every political party, in fact every citizen, would have an interest to see that this is correctly interpreted. If she was not put up by WP or put up with the WP CEC's approval, put yourself in WP's shoes, would you want your hand to be forced by supporting her too much.

Mdm Vella was never the focal point of the court hearings. The purpose of the litigation was to allow M Ravi to highlight the arbitrariness of our electoral rules and over-concentration of power in the PMO. That purpose fell flat was the BE was called within a 4 month period. There was almost no attention paid to the case after the BE because no one was interested in something non sequitur and furthermore, irrelevant. WP would never have stepped in no matter what happened, short of putting Vella and Ravi under ISD detention

Have to give credit where credit is due. WP is the biggest power threat to PAP at the moment and win seats from PAP to throw them out of power. PAP will be most watchful about them.

You probably has no objection that another opposition party claims to be first to start talking about human rights, first to introduce the importance of creativity, first to scrap PSLE, first to highlight falling birthrate, first to introduce minimum wage, first to hold Malay forum, and a whole list of firsts that snatches credit from every other party.
