You're not doing SDP any favours by putting down your fellow opposition parties.

Go and tell that to the WP supporters who bash SDP. Better yet are there any WP politicians who are going to vote for PAP candidates over SDP ones?
Btw, I would not call WP an opposition party. They more like the PAP Lite. Anyway WP call themselves Alternative Party as they are apparently there as an insurance policy or backup for the PAP.

WP are not in the govt nor formed an alliance with PAP so WP is an opposition party.

PAP has reduced our parliamentary opposition to tokenism where opposition mps and ncmps, non-partisan nmps are in the house to create an impression of democratic debate.

Not sure if she is running there. This time around OPPOSITION running rings around the SCUMS in WHITE in terms of strategy. THere will be no 3 cornered fights amongst REAL OPPOSITION. Currently all wayang to throw smoke for the SCUMS. SCUMS machinery now blur like fuck. Heard from SCUMS" insiders, very stressed out cause they do not know where the UNITED OPPOSITION is standing where? Hahahaha

Well the PAP certainly has had the co-operation of WP who have dutifully performed the role of token opposition.

LTk talk about mulling a GRC contest is nothing but cheap talk to add to the election drama. Anyone who thinks LTK will leave Hougang and to contest a GRC should have their heads examined.

What are the chances that WP would do a musical chairs with LTK leading the Aljunied GRC team and Sylvia Lim contesting in Hougang?
Is it a possibility? Would the Hougang residents warm up to her?

I for one, simply do not see this happening. The Worker's Party has after all aligned itself as a proxy for the PAP. Sylvia Lim herself declared her party as an insurance policy to the PAP in the long run. Had WP been a progressive party under LTK's leadership, he would have lead a GRC himself back in 2006.

LTK himself when recently interviewed downplayed his role as a leader. He is no different from the other non-PAP MP, CST who has passed on PP as 'inheritance' to his wife in the hopes she can go on to enjoy the $200k/annum pay day.

After all the dust has settled, LTK will announce he will stay on and fight in Hougang, while Sylvia Lim will contest a SMC and they will leave Aljunied to be lead by their minnows.

Look at it this way: LTK and SL for all the chest thumping, deep down know they are better off facing PAP minnows in the smaller SMC; than to face a PAP minister in a larger GRC which has a more diversified cross-section of voters.

now fresh graduates with outstanding performance in school, starting pay in a reutable law firm is close to 7k per month,,,,,,,,,,,

average lawyer, 4-5k with big corporations

The problem is there are many small firms in Singapore, and many so-called size firms are packed with lawyers who are not employees of the firm but merely 'park' their license under the name of the firms. These freelancers will be lucky if they can earn 3K.

If lawyers are well paid, they wouldn't be running away with clients' money. And what is $4K or $5K when you work 16 hours a day ? You spread it over 8-hour day it's a $2.5K job at best.

The keyword here is young defence counsel.. and let me add..an idealistic one at some point in time. So was Chiam See Tong when he entered parliament back in 1984. Lee Kuan Yew himself was an opposition leader and parliamentarian before. His speechs at Chatham House rivals those made by even the late JBJ. Sylvia Lim, I'm afraid has long sold out on her ideals. The Worker's Party today is nothing but a lite version of the PAP currently. They give PAP the thumbs up, agree with their style of governence and policies and have assured the PAP that they will not form the alternative govt. To add to that, a certain WP member has even admitted that in the event the PAP falls short of a majority in parliament, the WP will most likely form a coalition with the PAP (see link below). Even well known PAP IBs in this forum are defending WP these days.

Do not expect anything to change for the better with politicians like Sylvia Low and LTK.

“But we either believe in democracy or we not. If we do, then, we must say categorically, without qualification, that no restraint from the any democratic processes, other than by the ordinary law of the land, should be allowed… If you believe in democracy, you must believe in it unconditionally. If you believe that men should be free, then, they should have the right of free association, of free speech, of free publication. Then, no law should permit those democratic processes to be set at nought.”
- Lee Kuan Yew as an opposition leader, April 27, 1955

“If it is not totalitarian to arrest a man and detain him, when you cannot charge him with any offence against any written law – if that is not what we have always cried out against in Fascist states – then what is it?… If we are to survive as a free democracy, then we must be prepared, in principle, to concede to our enemies – even those who do not subscribe to our views – as much constitutional rights as you concede yourself.”
- Opposition leader Lee Kuan Yew, Legislative Assembly Debates, Sept 21, 1955

“If we say that we believe in democracy, if we say that the fabric of a democratic society is one which allows for the free play of idea…then, in the name of all the gods, give that free play a chance to work within the constitutional framework.”
- Opposition leader Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore Legislative Assembly, Oct 4, 1956

haha i don't believe the WP is that stupid ... like the sayings goes: if u can't beat them join them .... the WP is trying to curry favour everyone ... when the time is ripe or when they get the majority in god knows when ... they will cut the head of the snake ... i believe it is their strategy now as they know they are not strong enough to fight head to head ...

Did you guys notice the clip on the same page where LTK debated LKY... he is quite gutsy manz, most of the PAP MPs have their tails between their legs in the presence of LKY. Wah this LKY run out of arguments bo bian go and call Denmark Finland Switzerland govt "mediocre". I wonder if anyone gets bored of his constant fearmongering "if you don't vote for PAP your economy will falter and that's the end of Singapore"

Should anyone who think that the SDP could win an SMC have their heads examined likewise?

dun see anything wrong with being a trend setter or a leader who wants to create a legacy in winning big! In fact, everybody who wins something notable becomes automatic legends... Just ask Kenny Dalglish who is still being revered till this day ! Just ask Fandi Ahmad, who despite his setbacks is still much loved by his fellow Sporeans ! Just ask MM or the MM from Msia... They are legends in their own rights ...

... So this spirit of enterprise should be encouraged especially in the field of politics... Spore politics has for the last decades been plunged into "yes sir or you r out!" politics... no, we need the return of mavericks, be they from the proposition or opposition ! Unfortunately, this was promised by some promising young cabinet leaders after the last elections but never fulfilled... Pls bring the romance back !

sadly... The pple who hum tum pple who want to set legacies must either be short-sighted, not thinking straight or both... "sigh"
