Hamas must be destroyed, but it won't be in the short to medium term.
1. They're the perfect foil for Israel to re-occupy Gaza and scuttle the 2-state solution.
2. Israel will never conduct a full-scale ground invasion in Gaza: the losses from prolonged FIBUA would be too great to accept for the Israeli people (remember Israeli lives are worth more than Arab lives in certain circles), and Israel's unsavoury reputation as an oppressor terrorist state will plummet further. The Jews value face more than the Arabs.
3. Other terrorist groups will step into the vacuum, Hezbollah to the north, PIJ in the West Bank.
4. The big players behind the scenes like Qatar, Saudi and Iran will continue to stoke the fires.
End of day, it's a tragedy for the Palestinians, because neither Israel nor the terrorist groups are truly interested in forging a Palestinian state, and none the Arab neighbours are willing to take in more refugees.
