</TD></TR><TR><TD><!-- headline one : end --></TD></TR><TR><TD><!-- show image if available --></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->LAST Friday at about noon, I boarded SMRT bus service 985 (TIB 917 M) at the bus stop near Goh & Goh Building In Upper Bukit Timah Road.
I had intended to take the bus to the stop near Woodsville Flyover, but ended up with more than I bargained for.
Midway through the journey via the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) towards Changi, the driver wrongly entered the slip road to Stevens Road. Realising his mistake, he slowed down and looked around. An elderly man subsequently approached him and offered directions.
However, the driver surprised the 10-or-so passengers by entering the nearby Esso petrol station. He proceeded to exit by the other side, only to shock everyone by colliding with an oncoming car.
After 20 minutes of verbal exchange with the driver of the car, and not a word to us passengers, the driver decided to continue with the journey. Not without running over a kerb though.
Once we were back on the PIE towards Changi, seemingly with the worst behind us, the driver astounded us further by almost picking the wrong exit, again. Fortunately, the helpful man was there to point out his error, but he soon found himself banging into a handrail as a result of the driver's sudden braking.
To my relief, I eventually reached my intended bus stop, as well as my meeting place, albeit 40 minutes late.
I am particularly upset because this driver neglected the welfare of his passengers. Granted, we all are human and make mistakes, but instead of retrieving the situation in a safe manner, he endangered our lives.
What is more saddening is that he did not bother to say anything to us - perhaps a sorry, or anything to make us feel better as we were all shaken.
Plus, it did not seem he knew much English, or traffic directions for that matter. He needed help from the good samaritan, who did not get a word of thanks.
I hope there are no other bus drivers who are road hazards like him. More important, I hope SMRT adopts strict practices regarding training for its drivers and safety on the roads.
I have never had anything so negative to say about public transport, but this instance went too far. Keith Tyrone Neubronner

They made the bus like king. Right of way, must give way, personal lane. Where got such things ? The bus drivers become complacent. NEXT Time, SINgaporean, when a bus knock you, law will say, you automatic are at fault, becos bus drive 'slow', it must be u not careful !

Further, the bus company are not doing anything pratical, except PR. Already so many case of accidents involving these 'commercial' buses. The accident rate is higher then 10 years ago.

And LTA, use ur brain, bus lane is for buses. Let the children buses, factory buses, all category of buses the use the bus lane. It will ease traffic, then ppl will not say u create jams to create excuse to create ERP. In the new year, pls make yourself less smelly.

Everybody's talking about how bad the economy is right now. Yet no one who can drive is willing to take up a job as a bus driver.

Thank goodness he's not a taxi driver too (or maybe he's moonlighting as one).

from the description, likely the driver is from china. it's ok.

but it's his attitude we are more concern. smrt owes is an explanation. lives are at stake.

</TD></TR><TR><TD>UNHAPPY: Visually-impaired, Mr Nair is disconcerted that not all bus drivers understand simple English. TNP PICTURE: KENNETH KOH</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>But Mr K Saseedaran Nair was let down twice on the same day, two weeks ago, by bus drivers who failed to alert him about his stop.
The reason: Neither driver spoke English.
Mr Nair, 45, a former mini-mart owner, was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease known as Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy syndrome less than a year ago.
It has severely affected his vision.
He felt helpless when he realised that the driver of the bus he was taking, SMRT Service No 187, did not understand a word he was saying.
He had boarded the bus at Lakeside MRT.
Mr Nair, who speaks English, told the bus driver he wanted to get off at Bukit Batok swimming complex.
But the bus driver, a Chinese national, replied in Chinese.
'I was taken aback that he did not understand even simple, basic English,' said Mr Nair.
After about three minutes, a passenger came forward to help, but the driver could not understand the other passenger either.
The passenger eventually advised Mr Nair to alight and take the next bus instead.
But that bus, which takes the same route, had a Chinese-speaking driver too, while the passenger beside Mr Nair also did not understand English.
Mr Nair then sought the help of two school children sitting in front of him.
He said: 'The driver communicated with them in Chinese when the bus was approaching my stop. They translated it to English for me and I managed to make my way home.'
Although it was the first time he had had such a problem, he felt the issue should be taken seriously by public transport operators.
Mr Nair said: ' People who work in Singapore need to know basic English.'
His concern: In case of an emergency, such as a passenger suffering a heart attack, how will the bus driver be able to assist?
He said: 'We are trying to place Singapore on a high pedestal in the business world, and we have foreigners coming to Singapore.
'But what will they think when they see that the drivers can't speak English?'
A SMRT spokesman said that the company does ensure that both its local and foreign drivers are tested on their English language proficiency.
According to SMRT, its bus drivers from China undergo a training programme that comprises courses in English language and English skills for customer service.
Local applicants must also take a basic English test.
And during an emergency?
The spokesman said: 'During training, they are taught to be proactive and seek help from other passengers if they face a communication problem, for example, if they are not able to understand the language or accent.'
SMRT has been notified about Mr Nair's case and is investigating.

"You pay peanuts, you get monkeys."

So we paid truffles and got pigs!

We would have been better off with the monkeys!

LOL

Yes, at least the monkeys don't discriminate against the non-Chinese speaking - they don't speak English, Chinese, Malay, Indian, etc... (In fact, they don't speak at all!!!!)

Can you blame the company even the fukin CEO is a lao CB FT from matland that knows nothing about running a transport system other than seeing the profit margin and yah yah tell people how much she makes for the company. Has she ever come out to tell the people how many cockups and bobos she made while she is the boss? Personally I think Sinkies are a lot of loosers that can't even run our own public transport system that we need to hire 3rd word FTs to do the job for us :(

Then conversely, if our elderly chinese-educated s'porean commuters need help from an indian bus driver that can't speak mandarin, then how??

Pua Chee Bye, the majority Chinese have been subjected to so many discrimination by the english speaking baba and the ah neh in the past and yet they learn to adapt. Now we have fuckers (as usual the baba, ah neh and some baba influenced sinkie chinese) who complain day in day out.

Singapore should be rename as Chingapore. I once when to Malaysia-JB with friends, we took public bus to go to Pelangi but not sure if this bus (forgot what bus number already), we ask the bus-conductor, surprisingly as we spoke to him in malay, he replied in english fluently.

So the point is, what has become to singapore bus driver who cant even speak basic english?

Dont tell me these China driver only learn to speak " Thank you", "How are you", "Good morning", "Good evening" or "FUCK YOU"?

This is fucking disaster.
