JOHOR BARU: Police arrested a 30-year-old government officer believed to have been involved in the robbery-cum-murder of a religious school clerk on Monday.

Johor Criminal Investigation Department chief, Senior Assistant Commissioner Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the suspect, who is a neighbour of the murdered woman was detained at his home at 6pm today. He has criminal records for violence and drug-related offences.

"The suspect is the victim's closest neighbour. The suspect was detained because he failed to provide a satisfactory statement to the police in the course of the investigation," said Kamarul Zaman in a statement tonight.

He said the suspect tested positive for amphetamine use. The arrest was made by a team comprising of Johor CID and Muar district CID.

On Monday, the body of religious school clerk Nurul Shahira Mohamed Yatim, 29, was found lying facing upwards with her neck wrapped in a curtain tie-back cloth in front of the master bedroom door at her home in Taman Setia Kasih, Sungai Terap, Bukit Pasir, Muar.

Six Nepalese men, aged between 25 and 43 were later picked up by police in follow-up operations around the neighbourhood.
