Girl gets probation for punching and shaming another

SINGAPORE: An 18-year-old girl who punched and recorded a half-naked video of another girl, who was 13 years old, was on Thursday handed 21 months' probation by the district court.
Nurliyana Mohd Johani was convicted of hurting the minor by slapping, kicking and punching her on January 14, 2012, at a sheltered hut in Petir Park in the evening.
She is said to have committed the offences together with another girl, a 15-year-old student.
The pair hit the victim within a span of 10 to 15 minutes, halting intermittently.
The assault stemmed from what the accused said were unsavoury comments that the victim posted on Facebook.
The two girls also ordered the victim to take off her clothes, and when she refused to comply, the pair stripped the victim.
While the victim was naked, Nurliyana stubbed a lighted cigarette butt onto her upper body.
She also insulted the victim's modesty by recording a half-naked video of the victim.
During sentencing, District Judge Siva Shanmugam stressed that the nature of the offences were serious.
But he noted that "rehabilitation is the primary objective in sentencing young offenders".
He added that Nurliyana was in remand while waiting for the pre-sentencing report to be ready.
The judge said he found probation to be appropriate in this case, and ordered the accused to also undergo 180 hours of community service, on top of a S$5,000-bond.
