Not all hadiths are authentic. They are methodologies to ascertain authenticity. Something that is absent on your bible.

Similar to Paul/Saul after the going away of Jesus, people will use his name for their purposes. Ditto for Prophet Muhammad. They will make up stories and attribute sayings to the Prophet, even when he said no such thing. They want to ride on the Prophets authority.

Who are the chains of narrators?When did the event happen?
Which period did they live?
Where and when did they live?
Their biographies. Their lineage.
Does it contradict the Quran? Have they ever been caught lying? And more.
Remember the chains of narrations were passed down the generations, and the above are also cross checked down the generations too.
We even have hadiths about the same event narrated by two different persons or more, down different chains through the generations and then miraculously they reported the exact same words the prophet spoke, word for word.
That sounds very rigorous and but may not be 100% professional. I believe censorship also involved and certain very authentical hadiths that used to make sense in medieval times but do not make sense in modern contexts are being censored off by muslim scholars.

If the direction of Petra is correct, it should continue to be correct and mosque today should face Petra.
The fact that all hadiths are retained in the book testifies to the honesty of these Hadith checkers. If the were dishonest you won't see a single fabricated Hadith as they would be discarded a long time ago. I have not researched into the directions in prayer. However there could be misdirection (remember it's 7th century and compasses and it's application may be in error.
It could also be some interested parties wanting that direction changed.
There could be any various reasons. Thus our insistence that only the Quran is perfect.
Bottom line is we don't know why. Thus in the tradition of hadiths, we reject it.

Most of the hadiths that embarrass you were normal to moslems. Such hadiths include verses on editing of the quran by a scribe, mahomet marrying and banging a kid and drinking of camel urine.
The islam that you practice today is a modern type of islam, very different from the islam 500 years ago, which in turn is very different from the islam practiced 1000 years ago.

How can it be different when the Quran remains unchanged unlike your bible, edited, verses added, verses removed, mistranslated, contradictory, full of mistakes.
