The National Parks Board (NParks) have ordered the culling of wild boars Lower Pierce and Upper Thomson despite a petition by residents of both areas.

150 signatures have been submitted to MP Mr Inderjit Singh to petition for an alternative solution to culling, suggesting alternatives such as migration, sterilisation via surgery and use of contraceptives.

However according to a report by The Straits Times, NParks are still going through with the culling.

“Having taken into consideration the views of experts, we conclude that it is, however, necessary (to cull the wild boars),” said an NParks spokesperson.

Nparks’ director for conservation, Mr Wong Tuan Wah, explained that surgical sterilisation would be too intrusive and traumatic for the animals as it requires trapping and anesthetising.

As for chemical contraceptives, Mr Wong added that the method would require follow-up injections which would be impractical for free-to-roam wild boars.

Furthermore, president of the Nature Society, Dr Shawn Lum, pointed out that migrating the wild boars to another location will only transfer the problem to that area.

The society will be looking at other ways to solve the problem - educate the public about the wild boars while considering methods to eradicate the food source of the wild boar in the Lower Pierce region.

The wild boar issue surfaced last month when some citizens living in the area spotted them.

Since then, the animals, believed to be travelling in two herds of around 100, was reported by Asiaone.com to have attacked a five-year-old boy, killed a dog and destroyed plant life at Lower Pierce reservoir.

It is not known when the culling will begin but Mr Wong affirmed that the board does not want to wait for a serious accident to happen before taking action.

The whole thing was orchestrated. First they got 2 nus researchers to copy and paste some study on wild pigs, calling them European Wild Pigs to connote they are alien species. Then they mentioned the pigs destroyed plant life as if they are the real ones that caused desertification of Sahara. Malaysia would be a desert by now if that is the case. Then a boy is attacked (is there a picture?). As for wild pigs killing dogs, both are natural enemies. Dog packs attack and eat their young while they kill them in defense. The pigs should be culled selectively. And make sure they don't fark up. Many people have died because hunters mistaken them for pigs. Put poison and the reservoir will stink for months. The pigs camouflage themselves well and people thought they have seen tigers, monkeys or even ghosts. As for their meat, rather bland tasting, which is why JB and Thai restaurants use heaps of curry powder. I like the teo chew braised pork using farmed pigs, cooked to perfection and perfect with beer. I heard Malays are partial to them too, especially their liver. The pigs are called babi hutan. These people would make lots of noise for the pigs to run into an ambush point further ahead where Chinese hunters are waiting. Still few were killed, they are masters at hiding themselves, go to Malaysian jungles and you thought the pigs are having pasar malam from the amount of tracks you'll find.

I wonder will they start to cull some FT too.

The poodles & ICA have already started in Joo Chiat & Geylang...Raffles Place, Shenton Way, Marina Square...all the techno parks...those are licensed by M.O.M., you can't cull them!

The authorities should leave Nature alone. Always trying to play God and meddle with Nature.
It's their fault that Singapore does not have any more tigers roaming the hills.

Once upon a time there were many such wild animals roaming freely on our off-shore Pulau Ubin and Tekong.

A massive culling of the species there started only after the outbreak of the swine fever a few years back.

Until then it roamed freely the jungles of these isles and many other off-shore ones.

When residents were staying on Tekong and Ubin, were this animals a menace?

The answer is NO. Because the people used to trap them for their meat.

This was a natural way to keep the numbers low and keep them (boars) away from human habitations.

I am sure we can find a better solution by using the above method, instead of culling these animals.
