SINGAPORE - The former principal of River Valley High has admitted to lying to a civil servant about his extramarital affair with a school vendor.

According to local media reports, Koh Yong Chiah, 61, began an affair with 55-year-old Loke Wai Lin in 2001, when the pair developed a mutual attraction during an overseas community service project. They had sex for the first time during the trip to Lijiang, China.

The pair also bought two white gold rings as a sign to pledge their love for each other, reported Lianhe Wanbao. At that time, Koh was the principal of Chinese High School.

Koh was investigated by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in 2005 for his alleged involvement with Loke but he denied the affair. He was the principal of Jurong Junior College during that time.

After Koh denied the affair to MOE official Ms Chia Ban Tin, she then submitted a report to the ministry to state that there was no misconduct on his part, according to The Straits Times.

Loke was a director and stakeholder of Education Architects 21, according to media reports. Her company provided education-related services to the college.

Over a period of seven years until 2012, Koh approved a total of 87 contracts worth $3.2 million to Loke, reported Channel NewsAsia. He was the principal of River Valley High from 2009 to 2012.

A second charge of corruption against Koh will also be taken into consideration. In 2012, Koh was suspected of being involved in corrupt dealings with Loke.

The maximum punishment for Koh's offence is six months' jail and a $1,000 fine.

Koh's second charge of corruption will also be taken into consideration during sentencing, according to The Straits Times.

SINGAPORE - The former principal of River Valley High School (RVHS) has been sentenced to four weeks of jail today (Jan 21) for lying about his extramarital affair with a vendor to a public servant.

61-year-old Koh Yong Chiah, who had pleaded guilty in December for supplying false information to a Ministry of Education (MOE) senior officer as part of a corruption probe, will be appealing the sentence, Channel NewsAsia reported.

Bail has been granted at $15,000.

Another charge for lying to a Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) officer was taken into consideration during the sentencing.

The Straits Times said in an earlier report that the MOE senior officer cluster superintendent Chia Ban Tin was tasked in 2005 to inquire into an anonymous complaint against Koh for alleged misconduct.

With the false information supplied by Koh, Chia then reported to the Director General of Education that there had been no such misconduct between Koh and the vendor, Ivy Loke Wai Lin, 55.

Koh had been the principal of four schools since 1995, and was the principal of The Chinese High School when the affair happened in 2000. During the 2005 probe, he was the principal of Jurong Junior College (JJC). He later became head of River Valley High in 2009.

In 2001, Ms Loke was working for the then Television Corporation of Singapore when she approached Chinese High School to take part in an overseas community service project.

It was during the service project in Lijiang, China, when Ms Loke and Koh, both married then, had sex for the first time in March 2001.

Lianhe Wanbao reported that they also bought two white gold rings as a sign to pledge their love for each other.

From the time of the 2005 MOE probe till 2012, Koh approved numerous contracts worth millions of dollars to Loke's company which provided education-related services.

The father of two did not disclose the nature of his relationship with Ms Loke to the quotation approval panel, and lied twice to public officers in the 2005 MOE probe and 2012 CPIB probe.

Public Prosecutor G. Kannan in Dec 2015 said this was a serious case of a senior public officer who was dishonest about the conduct of his official duties, The Straits Times reported.

"Public servants must be deterred from making false statements to cover up their misdeeds."

Koh was once dubbed one of MOE's"super principals" when he was appointed cluster superintendent in 1999 overseeing 11 schools in the south zone. He has since been suspended from duties, MOE said last month.
