A plane passenger who tried to open the emergency exit doors while the craft was mid-flight – and two others who joined him in a scuffle with flight attendants – have reportedly been detained by Chinese police.

A Capital Airlines plane had been flying from Changsha in Hunan province to Sanya in Hainan on Monday afternoon when the flight attendants noticed the man trying to open the door, zgjtb.com, a news portal under the Ministry of Transport, cited a microblogger as saying.

When the plane’s crew stopped him he threatened to commit suicide. A scuffle then broke out in which two other passengers joined the man in fighting the crew.

However, the flight attendants subdued the trio and alerted airport police.

“It’s really not an easy job to be flight crew, especially when facing the daredevils,” the microblogger, RogerStandy, said. “Fortunately knives are banned on flights.”

The flight landed safely in Sanya at around 2pm.

A staff member at Sanya Phoenix International Airport confirmed there was such a case, but said the airport authority was still checking the details.
