The Chinese are learning from the Finnish.

good to note that the Finnish Education System aims to equip the Finnish with at least a post-graduate diploma/degree, taking up at least three different languages is a norm. the best thing is: the teacher follows up with the kids for the first six years of their formative years, ensuring that the kids develop correctly. with the correct mentality imbued, the child goes far.

Like many things in Singapore - once you go in the wrong direction for too long you find it impossible to U-turn, be it housing, public transport or healthcare.

The hard truths become hardened. When school banding is eliminated, parents complain. When T-scores are eliminated parents complained. I can see Heng Swee Keat's efforts but the system has hardened over time. It is impossible to make the Finnish system work in Singapore.

One thing about the link posted - it says Finnish students scored "one of the highest" in Maths and Science when tested internationally. You know who scores the highest? Singapore. We put in tons of stress and mountains of effort to get a marginal edge over them. At the end, the Finnish educate 66% of each cohort to university level and Singapore less than 30%.

I agree with you. Once hardened, it hard to change. Govt has to bear a fair share of responsibility as much as parents. It will take a generation or 2 to rid parents of such mindset.

Anyway, getting kids to shine academically since young ( 7 yrs old ) is purely Asian. They like to see kids produce results after studying hard. Sometimes, it just kills off the interest in younger kids. All kids are made differently. Some are more academically inclined. Some are more hard working. Some are lazy. Some just cannot be bothered about studying.

Only a change of government can bring about change. Unfortunately, you know what happen every election.

even with a change of government, the revamp of the education system in Singapore can't take place overnight. takes a generation or more :o

Change will be difficult especially when there are will be many senior people still in there remnants of the old system. Same thing will happen "if" there is a change in gov't many who are corrupted by the PAP may not want to change.

nothing to do with that, bro, as much as we would love to hang some folks by their balls

the Finnish took a long while to improve their system over 3 decades ago. as much as we are imbued with the fastfood-nation culture, some changes require the complete overhaul of the mindset. that's why me assumed it would take more than a generation.

Its this exact same mind set that the government and hence nothing will change. Sure it will take a long time, sure, it will take a lot more convincing and time. However, what is the alternative without the change? Do people still want the status quo? or is it just the 60.1%?

Plenty, depends on what you are willing to do.

a) Change of government.
b) Stop sending you kids to the system you want to change and put them, teach them yourself.
c) Move to Finland, overseas, migrate to an education system you believe in.

Take your pick, and of course, there is the civil disobedience you can display show as well.

The first thing that needs to be included in the education curriculum is consideration towards others.
