if hosp n medical staff incl surgeons make money out of the transplant, it is only fair that the donor's family also stand to gain mah..... esp when it is clear that the recipients are rich blokes.

Forced to give up organs for others to make money out of it, isn't my notion of fair dinkum !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Robbery ala singaporianer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By law no money can change hands for organs. You also cannot trade for other consideration - ie special treatment or arrangements. These are offences under the Act. Any person who opts out from donating under the Act will immediately lose priority in the event that person requires an organ. Hospitals cannot charge a penny for the organs if the above does not make sense.

laws like selected presidency????????????????????????

I think sg hospitals do not charge for the organs, only surgery costs, at least for sinkees.

When I eat king crab, it is major cost component of the restaurant's bill................ so not paying for organ under the guise of donation is plain highway robbery - no wonder I see my surgeon neighbour changing his Lambo every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Middleman to be paid $300,000 to get kidney for CK Tang boss

By Elena Chong

WANG Chin Sing, 43, the alleged middleman in the kidney-for-sale cases, was to be paid $300,000 to get a kidney from a living donor for ailing CK Tang's chairman Tang Wee Sung.

The former musician is said to have arranged with various people to buy the kidney from Indonesian Sulaiman Danik, 26, in June.

This is one of the 10 charges which Wang was slapped with when he was hauled to court on Thursday morning.

He is charged under the Human Organ Transplant Act, which bans the sale of human organs, and anyone who aids in setting up such a transaction can be jailed up to a year.

Mr Tang, 56, who had to see a doctor in the morning, is expected to be charged on Thursday afternoon.

Sulaiman was to have received about 150 million rupiah (about S$23,700) for supplying his organ. He was dealt with last week together with another Indonesian and was released last Saturday after serving his three-week jail term.

He was arrested on June 19 after the ethics committee had given the approval for the transplant but the authorities stepped in before it could go ahead.

The other Indonesian, Toni, received 186 million rupiah (about S$29,390) after giving up his kidney to Indonesian woman Juliana Soh in March.

He then turned runner for a syndicate and came back in June to act as a liaison between Sulaiman and Mr Tang for a fee.

Last week, he was packed off to jail for three months two weeks and a $2,000 fine or two weeks in jail.

Wang is also alleged to have sourced Ms Soh's kidney from Toni and was paid about $8,000.

The other charges accuse him of having instigated Mr Tang, Toni and Sulaiman to make false statutory declarations about being related to the recipients and that no money changed hands.

He is also said to have instigated the two Indonesians and Mr Tang to lie to the ethics transplant committee.

Bail of $30,000 was allowed.

A pre-trial hearing has been fixed for Wang, who is represented by Mr Shashi Nathan, on July 21.

Your organs are like your CPF, they tell you they are there but you don't get to see them.

Your organs are like your CPF...it's your very own and must opt out of blanket schemes and plans as gazetted by law.

Genetically Engineering Pigs to Grow Organs for People

Scientists announce the birth of 37 pigs gene-edited to be better for human transplant.

These pigs have been genetically engineered to inactivate virus genes inside their DNA, a major barrier to pig-to-human transplants.Courtesy of eGenesis
The idea of transplanting organs from pigs into humans has been around for a long time. And for a long time, xenotransplants—or putting organs from one species into another—has come up against two seemingly insurmountable problems.

The first problem is fairly intuitive: Pig organs provoke a massive and destructive immune response in humans—far more so than an organ from another person. The second problem is less obvious: Pig genomes are rife with DNA sequences of viruses that can infect human cells. In the 1990s, the pharmaceutical giant Novartis planned to throw as much $1 billion at animal-to-human transplant research, only to shutter its research unit after several years of failed experiments.

Quite suddenly, however, solving these two problems has become much easier and much faster thanks to the gene-editing technology CRISPR. With CRISPR, scientists can knock out the pig genes that trigger the human immune response. And they can inactivate the viruses—called porcine endogenous retroviruses, or PERVs—that lurk in the pig genome.

On Thursday, scientists working for a startup called eGenesis reported the birth of 37 PERV-free baby pigs in China, 15 of them still surviving. The black-and-white piglets are now several months old, and they belong to a breed of miniature pigs that will grow no bigger than 150 pounds—with organs just the right size for transplant into adult humans.
