SINGAPORE : Singapore's economy grew 17.9 per cent in the first half and the government is forecasting full-year growth of between 13 and 15 per cent.

In the annual National Day Message, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the government's goal is to ensure all Singaporeans enjoy the fruits of growth.

He asked Singaporeans to make the effort, even as he pledged the government's support to ensure every student and worker can reach their full potential.

Speaking from the Pinnacle @ Duxton, the Prime Minister referred to the cityscape as an example of Singapore's dynamism and success.

While there is cause for celebration, he cautioned that the exceptional growth this year may not be repeated year after year.

Effort needs to be made by Singaporeans to ensure continued growth.

Mr Lee addressed three main concerns in his speech - ensuring all Singaporeans get to share in economic growth; developing and investing in Singaporeans so they have the best skills and training; and the need to reinforce the Singapore team with talent and numbers from abroad.

Mr Lee said: "Other countries are not only much larger than us, but have far deeper pools of talent than we have. We must make up for the shortage of Singaporean workers in our economy and the shortfall of babies in our population.

"Without an inflow, over time, our economy and society will lose vibrancy, our citizens will enjoy fewer opportunities and our shining red dot will grow dimmer."

Mr Lee acknowledged that Singaporeans' concerns about new immigrants - such as whether they change the ethos of society - are valid and need to be addressed. He made clear that the inflow will be controlled, and that only those who can contribute to Singapore will be brought in.

Mr Lee said: "I understand Singaporeans' concerns about taking in so many foreign workers and immigrants. Some of us wonder will it change the ethos of our society? Will it mean more competition for us at work or for our children in schools? Will the new arrivals strike roots here? Can they adjust to us, and we to them?"

He stressed: "We will make clear that citizens come first. After all, we are doing this for the sake of Singaporeans."

He encouraged Singaporeans to welcome foreigners here with an open heart.

Mr Lee also pledged to continue investing in schools and education, and workers' training and productivity.

He said: "We will help every school to offer something extra and different and thus give students more good choices. We will create new peaks of excellence in ITEs, polytechnics and universities, to stretch our students.

"I ask parents and students to work with us, to give our youth the best start in life."

Beyond schools, the government is investing S$5.5 billion over five years to build up the Continuing Education and Training framework.

It is also introducing many schemes and incentives to help companies and workers improve their productivity.

Turning to the Youth Olympic Games, Mr Lee continued on the theme of welcoming new arrivals to Singapore, saying that Singapore must impress with the spirit of its people, showing them how new arrivals here live and work in harmony with those born here.

He hoped all Singaporeans will work together to put up a good show and make the Games a memorable one.

Singapore's athletes have been training hard and some 20,000 volunteers are ready to welcome the guests. - CNA/ms

PRIME Minister Lee Hsien Loong has again called on Singaporeans to welcome foreign talent with 'an open heart', and reiterated the need for such an inflow, without whom he said the Singapore economy and society would lose it vibrancy.
Acknowledging Singaporeans' concerns about taking in foreign workers and immigrants, which he said are 'valid' and must be addressed, PM Lee assured them that citizens will always come first.
While stressing the critical need to reinforce the Singaporean team with talent and numbers from abroad, he said the Government will control the inflow, 'to ensure that it is not too fast, and not too large.'
'We will only bring in people who can contribute to Singapore, and work harder to integrate them into our society. And we will make clear that citizens come first. After all, we are doing this for the sake of Singaporeans,' said PM Lee in his televised National Day message on Sunday evening, the eve of Singapore's 45th birthday.
He said foreigners also help make up the shortage of Singaporean workers and the shortfall of babies in the population.
'Without an inflow, over time our economy and society will lose vibrancy, our citizens will enjoy fewer opportunities, and our shining red dot will grow dimmer,' he said. 'We cannot do without a proportion of foreign workers, or a continuing flow of PRs and new citizens.
'Let us welcome them with an open heart, help them to fit in and encourage those who will become citizens to strike roots here. If we do this well, by the next generation, their children will be native Singaporeans.
'Remember, we ourselves are descendants of immigrants too. With new arrivals living and working harmoniously with those born here, we will keep Singapore dynamic, cosmopolitan, and successful.'

The easiest way to measure commitment is to see how many PRs or new citizens let their kids serve NS...

You see, in the olden days, there was no nationhood, no border control.... Singapore was just a place for making money. Those who came to make their money, could easily stay on or go back to homeland. In those days, you didn't even need to have passport to go back to China or India etc.

Today, the foreigners can easily come to Singapore to make money and go back home. What about Singaporeans? If we can't make it here, can we easily go back to our ancestral home like China or India or even Malaysia? We can't cause our ancestral homelands do not consider us as their citizens anymore. Hence, like it or not, all countries will form some kind of barriers to protect the interests of their own citizens first. This wasn't necessary in the olden days.

What he actually meant => Sinkies come from poor stock and thus it would be best to replace at least the bottom 50% of the population. The top 10% are higher mortals who do not need to worry about getting replaced.

....
He stressed: "We will make clear that citizens come first. After all, we are doing this for the sake of Singaporeans."

......

Either he is not telling the whole truth or is not in tune with the ground from his ivory tower.

From where the peasants are on the ground, he actually meant citizens come first when screwing time or being taxed whenever their breath or move.

From the PM, for the sake of Singaporeans, these citizens should give up their jobs to cheaper FW/FT. Better still, go JB once their are not economically productive when pass 40.

It will be interesting, though it will never be, to know the actual number of citizens that are jobless regardless of still looking for a job after many years or gave up looking altogether.

<'Remember, we ourselves are descendants of immigrants too. With new arrivals living and working harmoniously with those born here, we will keep Singapore dynamic, cosmopolitan, and successful.' Can someone rebut him on this CB line of argument, used by PAP until "Chow Tah" oready...
I'm too tired to rebut lah...

.....

I always felt the statement 'ourselves are descendents of immigrants' when comparing with the new FTs/PRs. etc., very insulting to our fore-parents.

Our fore-parents came to Singapore when it is still a fishing village, accordingly to a 86-year old man, and the city was then an 'un-developed' piece of land filled with thrashs and high crime-rate. Most of these very early immigrants normally worked as coolies, labourers and samsui women, with just enough for, hopefully, 3 square meals with enough left over to sent back home.

Most do not even have a return ticket to go home.

Today's FT/PRs, etc., arrive on a red carpet, good infrastructures, safe environment.......etc., and a government that welcome them over the citizens ! Most have set eyes on a final passport in a truly first-world country after getting the PR/citizenship here.

Isn't this an insult to the earlier immigrants to be compared to the current lot ?

If this lot of new immigrants are coming with a similar goal of contribution to their host country, then they should head for undeveloped countries, low salary, crime-infested environment, so thast they can contribute significantly to their chosen country. Certianly not here in Singapore to reap what wer planted by the citizens.

Either our current PM totally mis-connected to history while borned with a golden spoon in his mouth, or the ground, or likely both, or his father is hiding the fact that the earlier immigrants came in an envrionment same as current, which meant that he did not do anything for the country since 45 years ago!

PLEASE DO NOT EQUATE EARLIER IMMIGRANTS TO THIS CURRENT LOT. BOTH ARE HERE FROM A DIFFERENT TIME FRAME AND FOR A VERY DIFFERENT OBJECTIVE.

I liken this speech to "Raising GST To Help The Poor".

Not one of the better speeches in content.

Most will not believe and be even more pissed off by the insulting of Singaporeans' intelligence. But then 66.6% no balls so who cares.

BTW, he doesnt look good. Hope its just tiredness or a bout of flu.

PM Lee must have gotten the message that FTs are not welcome. It is a bad attempt to please Singkees.... By saying singapore needs them.

In short, it is a political sucide statement.

Where is LKY who is suppose to jump out of the coffin to help LHL if there is a need?
