SINGAPORE - A former general manager of a fast food restaurant outlet was jailed for nine months on Wednesday (April 13) for misappropriating $79,086.

Lee Wei Ting, 27, was employed at the McDonald's restaurant in IMM mall when she pocketed the money between a period of three months last year from various avenues - cash registers, backup fund, petty cash as well as CapitaLand vouchers.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Zhongshan told the court that Lee had been working at the restaurant for the past 10 years. She became the general manager about two years before the offences, earning $3,300 a month.

Her responsibilities included overseeing the duties, development and performance of three assistant general managers at the restaurant.

On multiple occasions between Aug 7 and Nov 9 last year, she misappropriated property worth $79,086 and used the money to pay for her gambling debts and other personal expenses.

DPP Tan said she had covered up her misappropriation through various means - rolling over future sales; altering or forging entries in the restaurant's records; maintaining two sets of records of cash movements; and falsely claiming that she needed to use the cash for staff incentives or to buy things for the restaurant.

She had also lied to the assistant general managers that she would help them deposit the cash into the safe while they performed other duties.

A McDonald's business consultant was informed by the finance department that several cash deposit bags from the restaurant were missing last Nov 9. She made a police report two days later.

Lee has made full restitution.

She could have been jailed for up to 15 years and fined for criminal breach of trust as a servant.
