I too suspect that it something to do with inferiority complex. I wonder if it falls under one of those disorders that has a name such as obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Actually there is another one called Obsessive–compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is a personality disorder which involves an obsession with perfection, rules, and organization. People with OCPD may feel anxious when they perceive that things are not right. This can lead to routines and rules for ways of doing things, whether for themselves or their families.

It is a personality disorder, though in your friend's case, quite harmless.

The primary symptoms of OCPD are a preoccupation with details, rules, lists, order, organization, and schedules; being very rigid and inflexible in their beliefs; showing perfectionism that interferes with completing a task; excessive focus on being productive with their time; being very conscientious; having inflexible morality, ethics, or values; hoarding items that may no longer have value; and a reluctance to trust a work assignment or task to someone else for fear that their standards will not be met.

Some people with OCPD, but not all of them, show an obsessive need for cleanliness. Those that do not show this tendency are sometimes good at setting up systems to maintain cleanliness, but may not follow through with the need to clean because of other "more important" priorities. For example, the need to get a good grade or finish a project at work might cause the OCPD person to have a quite messy and unorganized home. But if that same person was suddenly unemployed or finished with other activities, he or she could very well start becoming obsessed with cleanliness as other activities take up less time.

There is a wiki page on this disorder : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsessive–compulsive_personality_disorder

You are right. This guy is a nice guy and he does no harm. I used to get irritated however its now comical and a bit of an entertainment to see what he will ask to differentiate,

Actually, I feel in a way, Singapore lacks differentiator, all this talk about innovators/creativity etc is very lacking in Singapore society. Perhaps his business failed because it wasn't "allowed" in Singapore. Like the "No U-turns Syndrome" Sim Wong Hoo mentioned.

differentiators can be the most influential archetype in the business world and create markets. steve jobs is an example. however, many like this guy is small time and his action become comical.

Yeah met people like him before. People who prefer to live a fantasy-like, smoke and mirrors lifestyle for the sake of their giant egos. Problem is everyone gets caught out someday.

This chap's son will get a rude awakening when the car gets repossessed and he has no vehicle to drive escorts around anymore.

I met this chap about 8 years ago but I wonder if there are others like him.

He runs a small business but claims to be an astute businessman. Here are some interesting traits

There is nothing that he does that is not special. In the 8 years that I have known him, he has since lost his then business and sold his HDB flat to prevent bankruptcy. He is running another business now. He now rents a place and stays with the family. Son before passing driving test already got car. His 3 kids have the impression that Dad is a whiz in business.

Dear Rogue Trader,

The discription of Financiers, Connectors and Differentiator appears interesting.

Could you elaborate further for these 3 kinds of businessmen? And perhaps state some examples that fit into these categories?

For interest only.

He runs a small business but claims to be an astute businessman. Here are some interesting traits ;
- everything that he orders must be specially ordered and he goes to the wholesaler to get it. Durian season, special order from Malaysia, brought in by special contact.
- go eat Chicken rice, must go to East Coast 5 star and the guy there will prepare special plate of steamed / roast etc.
- Order cake for birthday, must go Ghim Moh and cake will look different
- buy car, car seats will be different and specially ordered.
- only goes to places where they know and acknowledge him.
- claims to have good contact for mechanic, house contractor, politician, customs agent, etc

He's probably more successful front and back than a retired lower insignificant rung filler of the Tudors and Medici such as you (ie garbage parasite).

Financiers are very good with money. they understand risk, market theory and always using money to make more money.example is george soros. Connectors are classic people's people. very good networker, good in communication, branding and marketing. they have powerful friends from ivy league, work. social club, church etc to turn to for lobangs. like obama and clinton. Differentiator are the more creative people. they innovate and create market niche of their own. more often found in tech industry.
of course, everyone in the world are a combination of 2 or more of these personality archetypes. like i wrote before that steve jobs is a differentiator, but he is also a damn solid communicator. This model is useful to see what our strength and weaknesses are and use them in day to day.

Yeah that exactly right. I too thought this guy was good businessman and eventually realised that he had a disorder. This is has nothing to do with being a business differentiator. First he mortgaged his mother's bungalow for business and lost it. Then he sold his own HDB flat. The word comical comes to mind.

Eventually I realised that people remember him for his quirky orders.

His kids don't seem to be bothered that they don't own a house but they got 3 cars. By the way,all 3 cars are Kia.

None of my colleagues or friends who met him have come across such a person in their life.

His ego is bigger than his brain.
To people like him, the only thing that matters is face.
There are plenty others like him.

I know someone like that. Could it be the same person?

Was the bungalow located somewhere between Grange Road and the Malaysian embassy?

actually, its quite rare to see people with no attachment to HDBs, or Accomodations...

perhaps he did his calculations right, and it's simply not worth it to own a flat, perhaps rental may be a better deal?

and since he got 3 cars, maybe he could rent out his cars as a source of income?

it's quite profitable renting cars... especially in Singapore.

now adays, KIA cars design are matching those of Audi's as the designer of Audi are working with them now...
