SINGAPORE: The Ministry of National Development is "seriously considering how to create townships for foreign workers which are sustainable and self-contained", says Foreign Minister George Yeo.

Foreign workers come under the spot light, after an announcement of plans to turn the former Serangoon Gardens Technical School in Burghley Drive into a hostel for 1,000 foreign workers. This created an uproar in the middle-class Serangoon Gardens estate, with some residents signing a petition against the change.

Mr Yeo, who is an MP for Aljunied GRC where the area is located, said on Sunday that he welcomed the debate over the proposed dormitory.

He said that on the one hand, there are legitimate concerns about whether a large community of foreign workers living next door can cause problems, while on the other, Singaporeans must open their hearts to them because they contribute to Singapore's economy.

Mr Yeo added that fellow Aljunied GRC MP Mrs Lim Hwee Hua is writing a letter to the Minister of National Development airing residents' concerns.

Mr Yeo said: "We have to find a balance and we have to create better facilities for foreign workers so that they can get cheaper access to food, to shops, they can have their own places for recreation and so on.

"These, I believe, are ideas which MND (Ministry of National Development) is seriously considering, how to create townships for foreign workers which are sustainable and self-contained."

Seems like signs of Apartheid to me

This goes to show how ridiculous the amount of FTrash the Familee has imported into Peesai has become. Expect the FTrash to declare "independence" for their "township" one day! The Familee has created a freaking big time bomb to ignite civil war! Emigrate while u still can! Expect GST to be hiked again to create this "township" even while the FTrash remits money by the billions back home?

Proposed town plan:

This has never been a problem in the past, but why has it become one now? It's cos the mindless importing of FTrash by the Familee that has turned Peesai into one piece of overcrowded nose snot, depressing pay and putting unbearable strain on resources, which the Familee even has the gall to *cut back* to satisfy their insatiable greed! And Sporns are fed up. The situation will turn violent and ugly soon. Putting the Bangala FTrash in the heart of a landed property estate is one such example. They thought they could pull it off, but they underestimated the willingness of Sporns to fight back this time. Now they lan lan have to fall back on Plan B and spend $ on building a ghetto, which in itself is gonna cost $$$. One can safely assume that the Papaya scholar directors are working in overdrive on how to finance it with an increase in GST and tariffs. The Familee is one wicked group of beasts that want the cake and eat it too.

Sure, it looks on the surface like a bunch of snobbish elites trying to ask some poor, hardworking workers to fuck off, but let's look at the REALITY of the situation.

This is our HOME, and no matter how sympathetic their living conditions, we must NEVER give them even the same benefits as us. That's why all developed countries have immigration quotas and strict rules, or they'll be overrun by immigrants from Africa and Asia and their countries are ruined.

No matter how you spin it, the FACT is that these workers do not behave like 1st-world residents, and a small group will surely cause trouble occasionally, get getting drunk, gang fights, gang raping girls in the woods. They will destroy the quality of life in any neighbourhood.

Last month, a canadian journalist wandered into a ghetto housing asylum seekers near the french-british tunnel, and was raped. The police said no one should wander there after 5pm. I have no pity for asylum seekers and unskilled immigrants from under-developed countries. Understand what culture they are from - you give an inch, they take a mile.

We have to look at both sides of the coin. I believe in general, most of us do not have anything against foreign workers. However, we also cannot ignore the fact that their concerns are not without grounds. Therefore, I feel we all should have an open mind about this topic and not just jump into giving comments on saying who is right or wrong. One of these days you may find yourself "caught" in this same situation, then what happens? You change your opinion and comments?

Who'd actually want a thousand over workers imported into their neighbourhood? Dorms are very dense accomodation, and that's a large part of the problem.

Practically, the estate will have to deal with a sudden influx of crowds, worse traffic and loss of personal space. Stereotypically, there will be a concern on crime, maid pregnancy, litter on streets, boozing indians, pee-ing in gutters. All of which, affect property price.

Sure, it's not fair to stereotype all foreign workers. But there's no smoke w/o fire, and given the sheer volume (1000+) there's bound to be more than a fair share of troublemakers.

Those who're condemning the Serangoon Gardens residents, ought to raise their hands and volunteer to have the dorms built outside their front door.

I was a former student of Serangoon Technical Secondary School.

That school has never been prominently featured before as it was not a good school (academically) until now.

It was a notorious school back in the 70s and early 80s, with gangsterism being one of them.

In fact, not a lot of people know where the school was until now.

Ha Ha.

Everyone is talking about building a good mouse-trap, but we all forget the real problem is getting rid of the mice!

So......why are so many foreign workers needed here in the first place?? And why can't the employment terms be better so locals can do these jobs???

This cannot be allow to happen, with a town for FTs.. this will give rise to alot of problems most of it will be social. And we might be getting a whole new strains of virus from these FTs also. Singapore cannot afford to have such a big concentration of FTs in one place. A strict quota must be place and not opening up the country to any Tom, Dick or Harry. Let this governemtn run spore for another 5 years will be the biggest mistake. when Old man say it will take 5 years for the oppostion to ruin the system he have built, why not take a look at what 'good' policies the govt have been coming up with.

I rather take the risk and vote in more oppositions than to have one party. These out of touch ministers does not deserve their million dollar.
