there are two type of patients
1} Lump sum whereby payment is made in one go and
2} Monthly payment.
They will treat the monthly patient well as they will be
recieving money every month and the longer they stay
they will have more money whereas for the lump sum patient
the faster they die they will be happy as they would bave
benefitted from the advanced payment.

Proper checks important in taking care of elderly: nursing homes

By Saifulbahri Ismail | Posted: 10 June 2011 2238 hrs

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1134494/1/.html

SINGAPORE: Some nursing homes say proper supervision is important in taking care of elderly residents.

This follows the Ministry of Health's (MOH) move to suspend the Nightingale Nursing Home along Braddell Road from admitting new patients, after staff there were found to have mistreated a resident.

The incident came to light after Channel NewsAsia alerted the MOH to a video, taken by a hidden camera on a patient's bedside.

The video showed an elderly woman patient sitting next to a bed without any clothes while the ceiling fans in the room were switched on.

After a while, two staff members were shown lifting the patient and throwing her onto a bed.

In one footage, a staff member was shown slapping the patient after she moaned in pain.

The homes Channel NewsAsia spoke to said that they have measures in place to prevent such incidents from happening.

At the Windsor Convalescent Home, the management reminds its staff about their responsibility to the elderly.

Maggie Ng, manager of Windsor Convalescent Home, said: "We told them, 'this is not the way to treat an old patient'. You just imagine: your own parents, if they are being treated this way....You want yourself to be (treated) in this way in future? There will be a retribution."

The home has put in place several measures to help staff nurses perform their job.

The centre manager is on standby 24 hours should any such incident occur. New nurses are also put through a mentorship programme.

The nursing home has 50 patients aged between 50 and 90 years. It has 14 staff nurses, all of them foreign workers coming from the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

The job there is stressful, so it's important that staff nurses' well-being is taken care of.

Ms Maggie Ng said: "Usually, we will check with them (to see)whether they are ok. (We tell them that if they have) any problems, just come and see us. Don't let go of your frustrations on patients."

Louanne Rhomei, a nurse at Windsor Convalescent Home, said: "Even if we are very stressful at work, we just manage our anger. We are not angry with them (residents). We just tell them (nicely) even if they (say) bad words."

At the ECON nursing homes, regular checks are in place to ensure the well-being of patients. These include daily checks by the centre manager and staff nurses. Measures are also in place so that residents can provide constructive criticisms and feedback.

Nursing home incident: Send strong signal on mistreatment

Staff should be sacked

Letter from Joanne Tan Letter from Dave Yap 04:47 AM Jun 11, 2011I

REFER to the report on the mistreatment of an elderly woman at

Nightingale Nursing Home ("Nursing home not allowed to take in new patients", June 10).

It is stated that the staff member involved has been disciplined. What sort of measures were taken? In my view, the staff member should be sacked and not allowed to work in the same or similar (healthcare/childcare) industry again. The mean streak shown is a basic character flaw which I doubt disciplinary action can cure.

A strong message also needs to be sent to those working in the healthcare/childcare sectors that such mistreatment will not be condone.

From the video shown on the news on Thursday night on television, it appeared that more than one staff member was involved. Two of the staff lifted the old lady and threw her onto the bed with force. And when the old lady wailed in pain, one staff member slapped her on the mouth while another scolded the patient.

What is disheartening is that the act was not one of oversight or carelessness. It appears to have been done deliberately as the staff member is seen raising her left arm to throw the old lady down from a greater height. Next, she slapped the old lady not once, but twice.

I feel sorry for the family of the old lady who could not take care of her at home for whatever reason. Nursing homes in Singapore are not cheap and if we cannot trust the professionals to do the job at a premium, then what other options are there?

Active supervision vital

I was shocked to see, on the news on Thursday night, a video of an elderly woman being mistreated at a nursing home. How long this abuse has been going on and how many other patients have suffered the same ill treatment, is anyone's guess.

While the revelations are shocking, I am not totally surprised that such things have happened, as I have had the opportunity to observe two nursing homes.

The staff at the residence with many patients tend to be bad-tempered and indifferent when asked for help. It is apparent that they are overworked and overwhelmed by the needs of patients.

At the smaller home, the centre manager often goes around talking to staff, patients and visitors. Whether this was "for show" or real, the feeling was that patients were better treated here.

I think it is very important that a centre's manager plays an active supervising role instead of being holed up in the office, unaware of what is happening elsewhere in the home.

In any case, there is no excuse for the two staff in the video to have mistreated the patient, and they should be dismissed because they are not suited for a job that requires a lot of compassion to work with elderly people.

MOH investigations started immediately

by Neo Chai Chin 04:47 AM Jun 11, 2011

After receiving the video of the abuse on March 22, the Ministry of Health (MOH) immediately began investigations, a spokesperson said last night.

It verified the authenticity of the incident, interviewed the patient and her family as well as other patients and staff - including management - of Nightingale Nursing Home.

On Apr 12, as investigations were ongoing, it suspended new patient admissions and asked the home to show cause within 14 days why its licence should not be revoked.

The MOH laid out these details after MediaCorp broke the story on Thursday, having alerted the regulator from the start.

In late April, the home's management informed the MOH of disciplinary action taken and measures to prevent recurrence of abuse, such as more frequent ward rounds by senior staff.

The MOH imposed added measures, including regular feedback reports from the home's patients and their families. It is still making regular unannounced inspections.

Nursing homes are regulated by the Private Hospitals and Medical Clinics Act. Penalties for flouting regulations include issuance of warning letters and suspension or revocation of licences. In cases of serious abuse or maltreatment resulting in injury to residents, offenders may be prosecuted.

In the Nightingale incident, staff left an elderly woman bare-bodied on a chair, before eventually flinging her onto her bed and slapping her when she groaned.

The MOH said it receives 12 to 15 complaints and feedback each year, and poor customer service is a common complaint. It conducts regular inspections of all nursing homes to ensure compliance with licensing requirements.

Nursing home not allowed to take in new patients

by Evelyn Lam Li Ting 04:47 AM Jun 10, 2011SINGAPORE -

The Nightingale nursing home along Braddell Road has been stopped from admitting new patients, after staff were found to have mistreated a resident there.

The incident came to light after MediaCorp alerted the Health Ministry to a video - taken with a hidden camera at the patient's bedside - which a relative of the resident had sent.

The video showed an elderly woman sitting next to the bed without any clothes, while the ceiling fan was going at full blast.

After a while, a worker lifted the patient and threw her onto the bed. They even slapped the woman after she moaned in pain.

The woman has been a resident of the home for the past four years.

The nursing home, which is privately run, has disciplined the staff member involved, and put in place additional measures such as getting senior staff to visit the wards and check staff conduct, and holding regular meetings with patients and their family members.

The suspension, which MediaCorp learnt about on Wednesday, has been in effect since April 12.

In a reply to MediaCorp, the Health Ministry said: "There were significant lapses in the care standards provided to the patient in question. This should not have happened. There should have been tighter supervision of staff rendering care to vulnerable patients. Patient's dignity and respect must be upheld at all times."

A member of the patient's family told MediaCorp: "Of course we are unhappy with the incident. We sent her there for the nurses to take care of her, we're disappointed with what happened. We hope by bringing this matter up, it will help to improve things at the home."

The family has since moved the woman to another nursing home.

The Health Ministry said it will closely monitor the nursing home to ensure that all additional measures imposed are implemented properly.

It will subsequently ascertain if the suspension imposed on the home should be reviewed or if further sanctions should be imposed. "Our inspectors regularly check that all nursing homes are properly maintained, keep their patient records in order and institute effective infection control measures," said the ministry.

Nursing home operators are also required to maintain care standards on medication administration, fall prevention and housekeeping.

Those that do not meet the required standards or which require closer monitoring for any other reason will be subject to more regular audits. The ministry will also guide them on how to improve their performance. EVELYN LAM LI TING

Elderly woman left naked, then flung onto bed

AN elderly woman resident at an established nursing home in Singapore was shown being mistreated by staff there.

A video clip, apparently captured by a hidden camera inside the room where the elderly woman stayed, showed an elderly woman seated naked in a chair in plain view of the staff and other residents, and with the fan on at full blast. The video was first shown on national television yesterday.

Are the two staff members who ill-treated the elderly patient foreign workers? It is well-known that many workers in the healthcare industry are foreign workers from either Philippines, Myanmar and China.

lianbeng replies to snablog, "almost 95% of them are foreigners, only 5% are locals - director of nursing, nurse manager, office staff. at least 1 or 2 office staff also foreigner."

See got any gong kia go make police report or not. Then the assholes will be in trouble.

In this case, family members are the most appropriate ones to make police report against the care center and the 3 nurses.

In this case, I believe other families would like to thank this family for making it public. Otherwise their loved ones could have been getting the same all these while and they are still in the dark.
