A driver was killed and three passengers injured today when a seven-seat car veered into the wrong lane and smashed into the side of a truck travelling in the opposite direction.

Police say the vehicle was travelling at high speed along Ho Sheung Heung Road towards Ho Sheung Heung, near the border at Lok Ma Chau, when the accident happened.

The driver was declared dead at the scene while a 21-year-old woman passenger was taken unconscious to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin. She suffered head and chest injuries.

Two other male passengers, aged 22 and 23, were both conscious when taken to North District Hospital in Sheung Shui with neck and chest injuries.

The group in the car is thought to have been returning from a barbecue.

“Without any special road situations that call for attention, [the truck driver said] the vehicle veered into the opposite lane and crashed into the right-hand side of the truck,” said Chief Inspector Simon Pang Chuen-kwong, of the New Territories north accident investigation team.

“The private car might have lost control while making a left turn while travelling at high speed.”

The roof, front, driver’s-side door and front windscreen of the car were torn off on impact and the safety airbags were inflated. The car held dual mainland and Hong Kong registration plates.

The 53-year-old truck driver was not injured.

Relatives of the victim arrived at the scene of the accident, near Po Lau Road and the Dills Corner Garden estate, shortly after the crash.

Police say the scene of the crash is not considered an accident black spot and asked anyone with information about the crash to call 3661 3819 or 3661 3800.
