Driver arrested after police smash car windows to stop fleeing suspect
Drugs worth HK$14,000 seized after car mounts pavement and rams taxi

A motorist has been arrested for dangerous driving and drug trafficking after police used batons to smash his car’s windows to prevent him from speeding away in Tsuen Wan, police say today.
Police seized 16 grams of ketamine, 17 grams of methamphetamine and 2 grams of crack cocaine from his sedan. The haul has an estimated street value of HK$14,000, according to police.
The 28-year-old man is still being detained at Tsuen Wan police station for questioning. No charge has been laid.
The incident happened last night after officers saw a “suspicious” black Honda Accord parked in Tak Wah Street, Tsuen Wan.
As officers approaching the car for inquiries shortly after 11pm, it sped away but ran out of control and mounted a pavement. As the driver continued to try to escape he ignored verbal warnings and officers smashed the car’s window with their batons but failed to stop it.
The sedan raced about 200 metres before it rammed a taxi at the junction of Tsuen Wan Market Street and Kwan Mun Hau Street.
Despite the damage, the driver made further efforts to flee. “As the driver tried to speed off again and repeated verbal warnings were ignored, police used batons to smash the car’s window and subdued the driver,” a police spokesman said.
The spokesman said no one was injured in the incident.
Police figures show the number of serious drug offences increased by six per cent to 2,269 last year from 2,141 in 2012.
The seizure of methamphetamine, also known as drug Ice, increased by 138 per cent to 174kg last year from 73kg in 2012.
The seizure of cocaine dropped 62 per cent to 294kg last year from 782kg in 2012. Officers seized 245kg of ketamine last year, a 66 per cent drop from 724kg in 2012.
