Only an idiot or a retard would confuse an engineer who is monthly rated with a wage earner who's hourly rated.

What happened to free markets? The SDP wants to force you to except one of the first three jobs you are offered? So if you are an engineer earning $3000 a month and was recently retrenched, you have to except any job that comes your way? Even if its at the proposed minimum wage of $6.50 an hr?

And how do they intend to finance this?

"real" is subjective. Example, in the 80s, the Singapore organization of seamen (under NTUC) saved many jobs through grants, re-training and manpower deployment changes.

A union is not there to ensure you wages go up and up. If need be, their role is to negotiate wage freezes to prevent lay-offs.

And where is this Singapore organization of seaman now.

Labor unions are to represent workers' welfare benefits and that includes working condition, compensations and exploits. and most importantly negotiate fair wages as well as wage increment.

Wage freeze is only in bad times and in the event of layoff negotiate severance pay.

Look, you don't have to accept any job if you don't like. What will only happen then is you lose your retrenchment benefits. No retrenchment benefit is the current situation under PAP now. So what is the problem here?

PAP supporters should think more before opening their mouths.

You might say it does not affect me now ! It's already in all PMETs and beyond .

And you can't really say it's jobs that Singaporean do not want .

But what they can usually say it's jobs Singaporeans are not made for.

They always say Singaporeans do not possess the skills sets and qualifications .

And what mechanism is there to make sure you actually do apply for a job if these benefits get paid as long as you don't reject 3 job offers?

I support common sense. I don't know what you support but it is always easy to sing to the populist tune.

The example was based on Dr Vincent Wijeysingha's model of minimum wage and retrenchment benefit.

Whether you are paid hourly or on a full-time contract, when you are retrenched, you are simply retrenched.

So if an Engineer earning $3,000 is suddenly retrenched, wouldnt you expect him to seek unemployment benefits if he could? Now assume that he tried 3 times to get a job at 3 other firms and was unsuccessful becuase they offered him the min wage. Under the SDP model, he would have rejected 3 job offers and would be ineligible for unemployment benefits.

When the PAP is no longer the government the civil service will have an entirely new and forward-looking system in place. Instead of the current pathetic system of using MPs for what common sense should have been done earlier, the new civil service will be allowed to make decisions to better serve the public.

You are a typical PAPdog idiot. If the engineer is offered $800 when his previous pay was $3000 then something is amiss. Then the current salary of similar workers will have to be used as a gauge. There are many variables. In a recession a lower salary may be expected. In a booming economy similar or a higher salary may be expected.

You PAPies really do not have any common sense at all. It is not a wonder that the citizenry despise all of you because you are actually rather dull and dumb people and yet you have the nerve to want absolute control over everyone's lives.

You bastard PAP dogs have invited over a million foreigners into this land when there aren't sufficient jobs for locals and you dare to ask what the solution?

Listen. Is it so hard to fathom that after an engineer is retrenched he might not be able to find another engineering job?

And yes we get you. We get you very clearly. FT bad citizen good. PAP bad opposition good. Feel better?
