Dr M: I didn't expect Najib to do worse than Pak Lah

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad admitted today he did not expect Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to do worse in this general election than his predecessor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in 2008.

Mahathir, a vociferous critic of the Pak Lah administration, said that he thought Najib would have done at least better than Abdullah, who led BN to take 140 parliamentary seats in the 12th general election.

Najib, despite having promised Umno and BN supporters that he would deliver a two-thirds majority, could only lead the coalition to 133 parliamentary seats, seven short of Abdullah's achievement in 2008.

While not giving his final verdict on Najib, Mahathir (left) said Najib might face some criticism and rejection from within Umno.

"Of course, the people will question his capacity and his strategies," Mahathir added.

"Constitutionally, he remains as the head of government as long as Umno supports him," Mahathir added.

Mahathir said that he had campaigned for the Najib administration as well, with the belief that they would do better than 2008, though he did not expect BN to obtain a two-thirds majority.

'BN must learn from its mistakes'

He warned that BN must learn from its mistakes in the 2013 polls in the next election.

"This can become worse if BN doesn't learn from its mistakes," he stressed.

He, however, appeared apprehensive about the notion of DAP joining hands with BN to represent the Chinese in the government since MCA has decided not to take up government posts.

"That's up to Umno and DAP, whether they want to participate in the government. But I don't think DAP will, they have always projected MCA as Umno lackeys, now they will be seen as one if they join," he noted.

"DAP is a party that will always want to be in a position of dominance," he added.

Coming from a veteran politician & statesman, this is a rather childish comment, bellies his heritage!. Who doesn't want to dominate?, he doesn't??

Chinese 'rejected Malay hand of friendship'
2Q==

The Chinese Malaysian community "rejected the hand of friendship" extended by the Malays when they voted in large numbers for Pakatan Rakyat in Sunday's general election.

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said this today at a special press conference in Putrajaya to assess BN's performance in the 13th polls.

Mahathir said the Chinese community has been taken in by DAP's "propaganda" to topple a "corrupt Malay" government.

He also rejected the notion that the voting trend reflects the urban-rural divide in politics.

"Now urban extends to suburban areas as well. As a result, even Selangor has become a Chinese-majority state," he said.

Mahathir repeated his stance that the DAP's campaign was to make the Chinese community hate the Malay community.

"I have said this several times in my campaign, even in Johor. Lim Kit Siang brought about the concept of Malaysian Malaysia, with the intention of making the Chinese hate the Malays,” he said.

“As a result, many Chinese rejected the Malay hand of friendship."

‘Greedy Malays to blame, too’

But Mahathir said he could not discount the "greedy Malays" who are jostling for power.

"These are ones who can sell their own kind for power. There are three Malay-based parties, and there are cracks in every party, even in Umno," he said.

Mahathir then went on to say that the Malays have become "beggars in their own country".

"If Malays are not greedy, there would not be a ‘Chinese tsunami’," he insisted.

He also noted that more Malays had returned to the Umno fold in this election because they realised that it would be a “danger” to them if BN lost the election.
However, he conceded that there are "sophisticated Malays" who voted for DAP.
"These are the educated ones," he added.
Guan Eng: How can this be Chinese tsunami?
Meanwhile, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng lambasted the move to turn the Chinese as “scapegoats” and shape the election results as a “Chinese-versus-Malay” vote.
330x220x517cd16b910bb0c1198ffd864b045c08.jpg.pagespeed.ic.Zl2DehiCrh.jpg
“Many analysts have disputed this as a gross distortion of data, as this was more a urban-rural divide between Pakatan Rakyat and BN,” Lim said in a statement today.

“How can this be a Chinese tsunami in states like Terengganu when PAS won 15 state seats as compared to Umno’s 17, when more than 95 percent of Terengganu voters are Malays?”
He was referring to Utusan Malaysia's inflammatory front page headline today, ‘Apa lagi Cina mahu?' (What more do the Chinese want?).

The Penang chief minister also said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, if indeed serious about reconciling all Malaysians, “should respect the democratic choice of the voters”.

Should Najib fail to reign in the Umno-owned daily and stop it inflaming racist sentiments against the Chinese community, Lim added, the Umno chief would be seen as following in Mahathir’s footsteps.

“If Najib follows what Mahathir has done in blaming the Chinese after the election, then Najib has shown that he just cannot be trusted, like Mahathir.”

Let us hope that this does not lead us back to May 13, 2013?? for this time, this time it will be a million times worst!. If Dr. M, Najib & their people respect the needs & desires of the OTHER race, they have to work out a reconciliation now, rather in engaging racial tensions. They are now fanning & stoking the old embers of the race divide...that is frightening.

They should respect the wishes of those who voted against them...

Dr M looks so fit, alert and still very influential. Many hope to be blessed with the same abilities at a ripe old age.

Mahathir's plan is for Najib to warm the PM seat until his sons can takeover. Now that plan is dashed with the poor performance of Najib at the election. Mahathir knows that Khairy, the son-in-law of Pak Lah, is a threat to his son's ascension to leader. That's why Mahathir don't want to ditch Najib until he can find another seat warmer.

Dr M's son is already the Kedah MB.. Looks like it will take some time before Mahathir can dream of seeing his son becomes the PM..When that day comes, Mahathir will surely not be around anymore..

First Mukhriz needs to have a Minister's post in the Federal Govt.. Maybe during the next election there will be a Cabinet Post for him.. Only then can we see him eventually rising to get the much coveted PM job..

Same situation before like Najib who was the Chief Minister of Pahang during his early days as a politician.. After his stint as CM of Pahang, he was then given few plump Ministerial portfolios before eventually getting the top job in the country..

Watch out for the new Cabinet line up to be announced by Najib.. Keep a lookout for his cousin Hishammudin another Keris wielding UMNO clown..
t will be interesting to see what Cabinet post Najib would appoint his cousin..

UMNO Youth chief Khairy is another one too.. But Najib will not dare to give him a plump Cabinet post so as not to irritate Mahathir as the former PM just can't stand Khairy.. I expect Muhiyidin, a Mahathir's favorite to remain as DPM..

It could happen sooner via a by-election. In 18 months or 2 years time, an existing UMNO MP could be "persuaded" to stand down, leading to a by-election.

There are many factions within UMNO.

Hishammudin was the interior minister last term right? i bet he will remain at that portfolio as najib will want somebody he trust to head the polis which he will need to squash the bersih and prk protests.

Dr M's son shd get the trade ministry, no place better to get "kopi lui".

Interesting also to see whether Najib will appoint anyone from MCA.. Chua Soi Lek already stated that MCA will refuse any Cabinet posts given to their members for the poor showing in last Sunday's GE..

But interestingly, Khairy the UMNO Youth Chief said that MCA must be included too in the new Cabinet line up..
