[h=2]VIDEO: Dr Chia Thye Poh speaks[/h]Posted by temasektimes on August 17, 2012
Detained without trial by Lee Kuan Yew’s government for 32 years, Dr Chia Thye Poh was the longest-serving political prisoner in the world. This video documents his first public appearance since his release in 1998.

Fucker like Chia are those harping on past dreams and only low class under performing Sinkie would listen what he harps!

Or else why would a wash out like Chia still be harping about when he could have shut up many moons ago and be enjoying his sunset years now?

Singaporeans are apathetic towards injustice. Who cares if he didn't even have the chance to defend himself in a court?

Good to see that Dr Chia is still healthy and lucid. I hope he will write his memoirs one day.

You will note that for someone of his generation, he is very fluent in both languages -- a real testament to his intellect and learnedness.

Also interesting is his account of Nantah. Many young singaporeans don't know the significance of that institution and the role it played in the region.

Closing Nantah was the biggest mistake that the old man ever made. He should have listened to Goh Keng Swee and Lim Kim San. It has now left a festering wound in the psyche of the older generation of Chinese across Nanyang. He wrongly assumed that it was just another educational institution. It was not. It was the embodiment of the aspirations of the overseas Chinese community of South East Asia.

He might have saved subsequent generations from a limited education but he upset previous generations and killed the aspiration of one generation that commenced their education in main stream Chinese schools at a young age and had no where else to go.

It did not occur to him why both Wee Cho Yaw and Lien Ying Chow sent their children to English stream Universities but chose to be on the board of Nantah.

Correct, the government does not want the educated elites to be divided into rival camps - English and Chinese educated.

By the way the closing of Nantah in 1979 did not cost the PAP much votes where they were able to enjoy electoral successes throughout the 1980s...

The closure of Nantah had a deeper significance than most people can understand today.

Nantah was the people's university. If Old Man dared to close Nantah back then, he can also import foreigners to replace the 100% true blue Singaporeans. The parallels of the two actions aren't very far off.

Old Nantah grads were no slouches in the business world either. The alumni is very powerful in Malaysia - with a number of towkay datuks.

One even became Dr M's right-hand man when biz deals appear. The same person 'settled' the murder of the Mongolian gal for the M'sian govt.

I might not agree with some of Mr Chia's opinions, but I trully respect the man for having the courage of his convictions to stand up to the goverment on his fight for the common man.

There is ansolutely no reason to keep a man who has never faced court incarcerated for 32 years. There has never been such an event in modern historyanywhere in the world. He went in at the age of 25 years. Communism disappeared as threat by the end of the 70s. What were the auntorities thinking since then - an armed revolution and by whom and in what numbers ?

If the surrounding countries were not muslim in religion, the World would not have allowed this to happen.

History will come to regard the many wrongful things that the Old Man had done to individual persons to outweigh all the good that he had done. An unjust or wrongful thing done to an individual is a lot more painful and affect the individual person more deeply than good things done but spread over the entire population. There is definitely room for a little sacrifice of the populace to relieve a little suffering or bring back human dignity to some deprived individuals.
