No comment on any individuals but just in General:

1. A true reformist is better intensively interacting with own countrymen to find better direction for own country, rather than hinged on foreign powers. That is because you are opening your own national interest to be subjected to foreign exploitations. Weather Singaporean or Chinese or American that is the same. You have to limit your relations with foreign governments and organizations. And when you sense that they are using you as a chess piece , you distance yourself and reverse the objectives of their ploys 1st.

2. I re-use example of 辛亥革命 again, some of the reformist ended up as traitors, the rest did not. But most of them are closely related the (later) enemy of state - Japs. They can be educated by Japs universities, received helps and protection from Japs etc. But when Japs began to invade your country and occupy and exploit and plunder and slay and burn. You can not be friend with such an enemy any more. Or else you will be a Traitor for sure. 汪精卫 is the best example.

3. Can and must learn from abroad, and learn both ways - pros & cons, and NEVER do a whole sale adoption of foreign system / values in your own homeland. Import and implement a foreign political culture / system / value is killing your own country. Blind followers will never succeed.
