SINGAPORE: A director of an entertainment outlet has been fined S$2,500, or in default to 10 days' imprisonment, for illegally employing four foreign employees without valid work passes.

28-year-old Abdul Hannan Mawar hired the four to work at his entertainment outlet, Moonshine Roadhouse Pte Ltd, along Claymore Drive. He pleaded guilty on Tuesday.

The court heard that the four held work permits to work as foreign domestic workers (FDW).

Abdul Hannan hired three of them as waitresses and one as a cashier from May 13 to October 14 in 2012. He paid them between S$30 and S$40 for working on Sundays from 2pm to 8pm.

The court proceeded on one charge of illegal employment under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act. The remaining four charges under the same act were taken into consideration for sentencing purposes.

The accused was also charged for abetting a self-employed FDW by instigating her to work for monetary gains without a valid work pass through the use of the FDW's catering services.

Out of the five FDWs, three have been deported, while another two will be repatriated after the conclusion of the case. They will be barred from working in Singapore.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said investigations started after it received information on possible contravention of the laws relating to the employment of foreign employees. MOM has also imposed a ban on the company from employing foreign workers. - CNA/ac
