Parliament endorses Population White Paper 77 to 13
The population white paper was endorsed with an amendment on Friday, with 77 Members of Parliament giving their approval.
Thirteen said no, including all nine Workers' Party Parliamentarians, Non-Constituency MP Lina Chiam and Nominated MPs Laurence Lien, Faizah Jamal, and Janice Koh. NMP Eugene Tan abstained from voting. Eight people were absent.
The House had voted after WP chief Low Thia Khiang called for a division in the votewhen Speaker Halimah Yaacob wanted to seek "ayes" from those who were in favour.
A division is when MPs record their stands electronically instead of voicing it with an "aye" or "no".
The white paper's amended motion supports maintaining a strong Singaporean core by encouraging more Singaporeans to get married and have children, supplemented by a calibrated pace of immigration. It also calls on the Government to attend to current concerns in areas like transport infrastructure.
Earlier, both Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean addressed the House after five days of intense debate.
PM Lee said the population size in 2030 and beyond is for a future government and generation to decide. He added that he believes Singapore's population cannot grow indefinitely.
So while a population of six million will not be sufficient to meet the needs of an ageing population, the total number of people here should be significantly below 6.9 million by 2030, and should not increase further after that.
The Government also wants the best for citizens and is hence not passing the responsibility of planning for population matters on to future leaders, he said.

He, the bayi, as deputy party whip, choose to stay away from an important session and has the cheek to declare that he did not vote.
He didn't even has the balls to make a stand, whether he is for or against it.

Why is every one giving so much credit and face to Inderjit Singh. His record speaks for itself. On nearly very major policy debate he has always spoken against the motion is some way or the other and came right back at the end and voted for the motion. He is a true blue dyed in the wool PAP member. He has personnally benefited immensely from being not only a PAPPY but also more so from being part of AMK with Pinky. Have you seen how he stands like a dog next to Pinky every time there is a photo op? In the last election, when Pinky was being interviewed live on interview after the election results, Inderjit Singh was seen on TV in the background talking to some reporters. The moment he saw Pinky being interviewed, he made a dash to be right next to Pinky. He seems to have excellent peripheral vision when it comes to these things. He literally ran and was quite breathless. This is what my pet poodle does when I call. In this case he did not have to be called. His super sense of smell and vision made him make the dash and he stood right next to Pinky panting away like a dog, intently starring into the lens. Singh knows on which side of his chapati is well gheed. In previous cases he sort of get away with it. Not this time i think.The backlash against him now on the net is quite intense. He has now lost even the little credibility he had in the first place and he is trying to redeem it by claiming he was not present for the voting!! So what you were not present. It does not mean a ting. What a shamster and hypocrite trying to worm himself out of the hole he dug himself into.
