Hougang residents need no longer fear that voting in a PAP's candidate will affect the number of Opposition voices in Parliament said PAP MP Denise Chua yesterday.

PAP MPs are also independent and can '' speak boldly and without fear ''.

Mrs Phua also said PAP MPs are independent minded and often have more diverse views than their WP counterparts.

''Some of us, we are labelled 'more Opposition' than the Opposition ''. We express our views independently, boldly, without fear. She cited herself as one PAP MP who speaks her mind.

She has criticised the Government's '' many helping hands'' approach to providing social services and also spoken out against casinos.

''When I agreed to join the PAP in 2006, some of my friends predicted this: 'Denise you will be a one term MP.' They said I would not survive beause I don't toe the line,'' she said.

Haven't we heard all this crap before? Dr Augustine Tan former MP for Whampoa also used to claim the same mantle of being "opposition" PAP MP. But when push comes to shove, they became whiter than white. Their voting record is what mattered most of all. Don't be fooled by all this self-serving bullshit. If you are in government, you can never ever really represent an opposition voice. Their voting record is what mattered most of all.

You have to understand that their voting record will always be along party lines simply because parliamentary rules only allow a conscience vote when the party whip is lifted.

This isn't unique to Singapore. It's the same in NZ, UK etc...where rules governing parliamentary proceedings have their foundations in the Westminster model.

However, in NZ, the whip is lifted at least a couple of times a year on issues which are considered to be close to the hearts of all concerned... eg the changing of the drinking age and the law legalising prostitution.
