Another pertinent change that will be rolled out from July will see a narrowing of fare bands. The current fare band of around 2.4km will be shortened to 800m.
This will give rise to smaller but more frequent fare jumps than before. On a typical journey without transfers, this will result in higher fares.
PTC chairman Gerard Ee said the removal of transfer penalty is a significant change that will benefit most commuters.
'The decision comes after careful deliberation and scrutiny of the impact on both the transport operators and commuters,' Mr Ee said, noting that operators will bear 'the larger part of the costs'.
The latest fare revision, valid for a year, will result in SBS Transit and SMRT Corp losing a combined $32 million in annual revenue.
Mr Ee added that the change will give commuters 'more choices and greater flexibility to decide on the best route to reach their destination'.
The Land Transport Authority will roll out publicity programmes to raise awareness of the new fare system.
By June, commuters will also be able to make online enquiries on route choices and fare amounts at www.publictransport.sg.
