CPF Failure : 20% of aged Singaporeans work vs 7% in HK and...

There is outrage in HK that 7% of the elderly
above 65 yrs old have to work and to solve this problem the legislators are pushing for universal pension to push the figure of working elderly to zero.

How many singapooreans elderly and frail are still working? 20%.

How can this be when we have a pension scheme with the highest contribution rate in the world! And at the same time then lowest adequacy for retirement in developed world. ----------------------

One in seven Hongkongers aged 60 and above still has to work to support themselves, according to a university study funded by the Central Policy Unit and the Research Grants Council.

While the figure may not seem very high compared with other economies, a social science expert said the situation in Hong Kong was grave, as many old people found it difficult to get a job. ''The truth is that many older people need to work to live, but they cannot find jobs because they are not well educated,'' University of Science and Technology's associate science professor Dixon Sing Ming said.

The fact there were so many older people who had to keep working pointed to the need for the government to introduce a universal pension scheme, he said.

The University of Science and Technology's Centre for Applied Social and Economic Research has polled 7,153 people over the age of 15 on different social topics since 2009. The first part of this five-year study, called the Hong Kong Panel Study of Social Dynamics, was completed at the end of last year.

Of the 1,909 people aged 60 or above polled, 15.46 per cent said they had a job. Almost half of them worked between 30 and 48 hours a week while 41.42 per cent worked more than 48 hours a week. One third of the poll sample (33.22 per cent) who worked did non-skilled jobs, such as cleaning.

The median income for the elderly, according to the study figures, is only HK$7,500 a month, compared with HK$12,000 for an average Hongkonger regardless of age.

About 57 per cent of older people were assisted by their children, 28.52 per cent lived on the old age allowance (now HK$1,090 a month), and 12.63 per cent depended on Comprehensive Social Security Assistance.

''The government and society need to offer appropriate welfare to the elderly ... those living on their own or living as couples need more concern and support,'' the report says.

Backing up the study's findings, figures from the Census and Statistics Department from May to July show that 7.2 per cent of people aged 65 or above in Hong Kong are in the labour force. In comparison, the 2011 figure for Britain is 8.7 per cent, while in Singapore it is 20.4 per cent.
[\b]Ng Wai-tung, a committee organiser with equal rights group the Society for Community Organisation, said many older people had no choice but to work because they could not support themselves with their savings.

The fact that Hongkongers could only access the money saved in their Mandatory Provident Fund account when they were 65 meant many had to keep working after they turned 60.

Social welfare sector lawmaker Peter Cheung Kwok-che said the survey's results were saddening.

When the pap implement forced savings close to 40%
of a person's salary, it effectively takes over
responsibility to manage the funds well.so that the person can retire.
The person loses control of a
large portion of money he earns and the ability
to save for retirement with this money.
Govt after taking the money has the r
esponsibility to manage it well
s:o that as many pple as possible can retire.
When 3times the number of aged has to work compared with HK,
something has gone wrong

Noboby restrict, not even the PAP that you can use that 'forced savings' to make lots of money out of it.

The only thing that has gone wrong is your mindset and attitude. And for that, you should blame your parents for bringing you into this world! LoL

i dont get it.....u claim these 20% old people are all irresponsible fools and have to continue working in their later years because they planned their lives badly, but im pretty sure they have worked hard all their lives if not how they survive to 65 and have to keep working.

also if they planned badly in life, isnt that the government's job to make sure they plan well?isnt that the whole point of cpf?the cpf takes up 37% of ur income so that the government can plan for ur retirement for you.i mean tell me what other pension fund or retirement fund in the world does the country have almost 37% forced contribution rate and yet so many elderly people still cannot retire?do u know canada national pension fund only has about 5% contribution rate and almost all their old folks can retire well?doesnt that mean its a problem with the system and the policies rather than the individual?

u see this is the amazing disease of capitalism,it gets one to be self critical of oneself even when things are beyond one's control, when u lose ur job,it makes u think its a problem with u,rather than think maybe its a problem with the company,or the policies or gross missmanagement, when u cannot retire at 65,it makes u self critical, blame urself for not being able to plan well, but when u look at the statistic,20% employed and 37% contribution rates,u start to feel there is something bizarrely wrong here, something seriously wrong with the policies.

Bro do u understand what's the point of laws and policymaking and government?

This is not expectation of oneself or others towards oneself....this is expectation of oneself towards society and mankind....expectation of those who lead and have the power....expectation of those who have the means and the ability and knowhow....

And I know u are a fucking idiot who thinks he's a winner...in that case u should stop seeing doctors and using the internet cause that's relying on people who are better or smarter than u....I don't see why they have to help losers like u.

Our pioneers are identified as those who are 65 or older this yr
when Singapore tuher world, the pioneer generation includes those who were 16 and above, the day Singapore was born.
In those days, due to lack of eduction opportunities, many started working at that age....and those who reached retirement age this yr have worked for 40-50 yrs.
That is a long time. A long journey. Many of the pioneer generation spend their best yrs contributing to Singapore's economic miracle. Our society, our current generation owe a debt of gratitute to this ggeneration.

The govt has decided to give a pioneer package to our pioneer elderly this
year. This package attempts to address rising cost of medical - increasing subsidies,
Medisave top ups, much of it goes to medishield life premiums. After all this,. Todayour old folks still end up paying the most for medical amoing developed Asian countries, in Taiwan, japan, Malaysia and Korea they treat elderly for free, in hong Kong outpatient is free and hospitalisation is limited to HK$100 per day including surgery. Our pioneer generation has done so much for us deserves better. ....

Unlike the elderly in other countries where the elderly can retire our old folks often has to work until they pass away. To me this is very sad, our pioneer generation deserves better.
