MALAYSIA - The wife of a businessman was shot in what is believed to be a brazen contract killing in Sibu, Sarawak.
Madam Law Leh Kuong, 44, suffered severe head injuries in the attack which happened around noon on Saturday at a popular cafe.
She died at a private hospital at around 3.30pm.
She was the wife of businessman Lau Ngik Yin, also known as Ah Kang, 42, reported Malaysia's The Star.
Mr Lau was also hit in his back.
But his condition was reported to be non-life-threatening.
Shooting
The husband and wife were having lunch at a table on the five-foot walkway outside the cafe in Jalan Pahlawan when the gunman struck.
Also at the table were Mr Lau's cousin and his wife and a male friend.
The wife of Mr Lau's cousin was slightly wounded on her left hand, while the cousin and their friend were unharmed.
Confirming the incident, Sibu police chief Shafie Ismail said the gunman shot from about a distance of 6m.
When the group were having their meal, a red Proton Wira Aeroback with four people inside pulled up.
Two of them got out and one opened fire with a shotgun before they jumped back into the car and sped off.
The injured were rushed to the private hospital, about 2km away, by friends.
Police, including forensics officers, arrived at the scene shortly after and cordoned off the area.
They discovered four holes on a blind, two on a pole and another two on a notice board in the cafe, believed to be caused by shotgun pellets.
Police said they had not identified the car's licence plate number.
The Star understands that the deceased was the sister of businessman Mr Law Leh Hing, 42, who was shot dead in broad daylight outside a shop in Jalan Brooke on Jan 11 this year.
Mr Lau Ngik Yin is said to be involved in timber and entertainment businesses, operating several karaoke pubs and night clubs.
No arrests have been made.
Police said they were trying to establish the motive for the shooting.
Sibu has witnessed other brutal killings this year.
On Jan 3, businessman Ling Tong Hock and three members of his family, including two children, were bludgeoned to death in their house.
On June 14, bank manager Wong King Kui was knifed to death in the bedroom of his house.
In another murder case, Indonesian Hartono was found dead by his son on Aug 5 in his bedroom at the workers quarters of a shipyard in Rantau Panjang.
