A BUSINESSMAN who gave kickbacks of $73,500 to a fleet manager of a shipping management company was jailed for 14 weeks and fined $25,000 for corruption on Wednesday.

James Lim Hwa Chin, 51, managing director of Keyser Technologies, pleaded guilty last month to four counts of giving a total of $60,500 to Bindra Jaskirat Singh between 2006 and 2008 to advance his company's business interests by influencing Bindra's employer, MOL Tankship Management (Asia), to award contracts to Keyser.

Bindra, 65, has since been charged and his case will be mentioned on June 10.

Keyser, a limited exempt private company, specialises in making thermal joints used on marine vessels.

A district court heard that since 2001, Keyser had occasionally been awarded contracts to carry out repair works of expansion bellows on board vessels managed by MOL.

In 2006, Lim and Bindra came to an agreement under which Bindra would award more contracts from MOL to Keyser in exchange for part of Keyser's profits from the contracts.
